As a soldier, the first time I heard that quote ("No, I don't know that atheists should be considered as citizens, nor should they be considered as patriots. This is one nation under God,"- President Bush) I was disgusted. It's shocking that not that long ago we actually allowed such ignorance to masquerade as representation of one of the most progressive cultures on the planet. This is really disheartening. The truly sad part is that there are still Americans that think that way. And knowing that, I have to ask: Is that the kind of country they think I risked my life for?

@ C.Lewal Well, I appreciate you and there are millions of people that aren't assholes that do as well.

@ Meghan  Yeah the "non-asshole" ones don't get a lot of credibility in America though. It's always the "god and country" types. Which is ironic, because I can't begin to explain to you how awkward it is when those people approach me assuming I'm like them. They thank me and express their strong loyalty to me, but I recognize it as a blind loyalty, and I feel bad for saying it but as a rationalist that's inherently of less value to me. Still, I really do appreciate the people who say "I may not believe in what's going on, but I just wanted to let you know I still appreciate what you're doing". Just somehow seems more meaningful.

@ C. Lewal I understand what you're saying. It's sort of like an empty compliment in a way.
