With further reading, it turns out Mencken said some pretty racist stuff, which is too bad for the rest of us. It really gives me pause to read more of his material...

Morality is doing what is right, no matter what you are told. Religion is doing what you are told, no matter what is right.

We must respect the other fellow's religion, but only in the sense and to the extent that we respect his theory that his wife is beautiful and his children smart.
