JK Rowling denied top US honour because she's a witch. Good job USA.

Harry Potter author JK Rowling missed out on a top honour because some US politicians believed she "encouraged witchcraft", it has been claimed.
Matt Latimer, former speech writer for President George W Bush, said that some members of his administration believed her books promoted sorcery.

As a result, she was never presented with the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

The claims appear in Latimer's new book called Speechless: Tales of a White House Survivor.

He wrote that "narrow thinking" led White House officials to object to giving Rowling the civilian honour.

The award acknowledges contributions to US national interest, world peace or cultural endeavours.

Past literary recipients of the award include John Steinbeck and Harper Lee.

Others denied the privilege under the Bush administration included Senator Edward Kennedy, who died in August this year.

Latimer claimed, in his book, that the veteran politician and health care activist was excluded because he was deemed to be too liberal. Via

Literature is not generally touted as positive by fundamentalists at all. All one needs is the bible, right?

Maybe the "Left Behind" series could be an exception...

I always wondered why nobody ever attacked anything else that had witches or wizards in it. What about Mickey Mouse in "The Sorcerer's Apprentice?" I fucking loved that book when I was a kid! All kinda Disney films had good magic represented in them. OMG WALT DISNEY IS A WITCH!!11!!11!

UGHHHH!!!! This is disgusting!!! I already hated the bush administration, but this is UNBEARABLE!!! These FREAKIN' FUNDIES ARE complaining when anyone makes a joke or dislikes C.S. Lewis' "The Chronicles of Narnia" because "they're Christian" but they say that "HARRY POTTER ENCOURAGES WITCHCRAFT?!!!" HELLO!!!! Did it ever cross their mind that there is ALL KINDS OF WITCHCRAFT AND SORCERY IN THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA!!!

@skycomet - the difference is that in Narnia, only the bad guy is a "witch." Aslan is Jesus and the "Deep Magic" is God. That's not just an allegory, btw. I've read all of the Narnia books and the last one makes it crystal clear that Aslan *IS* Jesus. So, that stuff he does isn't "magic" it's "miracles." Big difference to the fundie mind.

Such a shame too. I loved those books and ignored the Christian undertones, but the last chapter of the last book made me roll my eyes in disgust at the entire series.
