Pope's letter protects church, not its victims

The Pope’s letter on child sexual abuse holds lessons for civic society. What he writes to Catholics about religion is a matter between him and them. But the Catholic church also operates within civic society, acts as a quasi-State at the United Nations, and sends ambassadors to real States. And the Pope’s letter includes assertions about secular society that are factually wrong.

Having read the full letter, the following seems clear:

1. The Pope’s main priority is to… Continue

Atheism - a Rough History of Disbelief

So I finally saw this on Youtube, but there's a problem... on every YouTube version I can find, episode 3 is cut off at the very end. Jonathan Miller is talking about how there needs to be a rational...

And then it cuts off.

Where and how can I see what's missing?

Also, the Atheism Tapes are available on DVD, but is this original program also? I can't seem to find it.

Skeptical Satirical Shorts Under 666 Seconds

This week has been especially productive for me as far as the film festival goes. I presented a freethought shorts program to CFI Tampa, and the demographic was spot on, and I was super psyched. Several independent film enthusiast were in attendance, and the films were well received. I'm also psyched about the online contest that we (Freethought Film Festival Foundation) are planning. The theme is Skeptical Satirical Shorts Under 666 Seconds. Online…

"A Reason for Reason" - From Atheist Climber Blog

There has been a lot of writing about the “Global Atheist Convention – The Rise Of Atheism” since its completion on Sunday afternoon, so most things that can be said have already been said. There were some good reports in the…

The Texas State Board of Education an Iniquitous Ministry of Pain.

It's been a good while, friends. Lately I've been experimenting with making a more conscious effort to live life instead of just writing about it, and it has regrettably gouged a nice big hole into the time I used to dedicate to both this site and my own projects. You may not even remember me.

Either way, I'm back again today because there what I believe to be a very dangerous threat has surfaced within the…

Ok so there are those against having health care for everyone in the United States.

They have it in England, Germany, France, Canada, and a whole list of others.

Of course, there are those who in those countries who do not like it. Then they just need to pay for their own coverage.

Funny thing is, having been in the insurance game the first thing you learn is that there will be someone who’ll call up and tell you they are tired of their employer’s health care plan. They are… Continue

Right Wing Arrogance & Ignorance

“It won’t be long until this is a communist country,” it was said today during a business meeting. The conversation was in regards to a Chinese supplier and their ability to expand space and operations. One co-worker jokingly stated that the government could just throw out the neighbors and raze the building, allowing the supplier to expand. The reason for this, my co-worker explained with a chuckle, is because they are communists. I retorted that it happens all the time here in the United… Continue

Black Infidels: Humanism and African American Social Thought

By Sikivu Hutchinson

excerpt from The New Humanist Magazine

During a talk show discussion on relationships last year, radio personality and self-proclaimed dating guru Steve Harvey charged that atheists had no moral values. Anyone who didn't believe in God was an "idiot," he said, and women should steer clear of these rogue blasphemers at all costs. While atheist websites were abuzz with condemnations of Harvey, his…

What is god?

I have realized that god is just a bunch of statistics from the universe, and, our ignorance on it is called religion. If there is or is not a god, I am not interested in, because this is like chating about the gender of the cherubins. Yet, people kill and destroy in the name of a god, whatever it might be, thus it is necessary to understand the true nature of this thinking because this is what god for sure would be, just a mental creation, not something one could know of or…

..and I thank God for...

"I thank God for all he has done for me."

"I know God has a plan for me."

"God knows what is best for me."

"Thank you, God, for helping me ______"

I feel.. negative emotions. Not anger, not hate, but when people say things like that, I feel this feeling that I can't describe.

Why do people thank their god for the work they've done? Some people don't even take credit for the things they've done, they credit it to their god. I know some people who have worked extremely… Continue

Twelve Steps and Twelve Apostles Both Fail You

The power of God is evident. We all must recognize a power greater than ourselves. It can't just be us and that's it. Right? Well, that's how I, and most of us, feel but how do we know? I've always heard that if you look for God you'll find him. So I went for an internet stroll looking for God in some of my life's experiences.

My last experience with an organized attempt at indoctrination came on the heels of my sinning. Me likely some alcohol. I'm 36 now and I've mellowed, but at… Continue

Diary of a Wimpy Kid - A Perfect Dump and Run Movie

Sixth grader Greg Heffley learns important lessons about friendship, being a good friend and identity in Diary of a Wimpy Kid. A light-hearted, middle-school buddy movie, Diary of a Wimpy Kid is a perfect dump and run movie.

Entering middle school wasn’t as easy as Greg Heffley (Zachary Gordon) anticipated. Some of the kids are way bigger than him. The same things that are cool in elementary school become a badge of shame in middle school. Greg does everything he can to fit in and be… Continue

God & Heaven: the end of the religious rainbow

This comparison is a day late, but I didn't have time to post it yesterday.

It seems that for many, all it takes is the desire for there to be a God and all his rewards for belief. They want this to be true with all their heart. In fact, over time, many convince themselves that they know it is true. In fact, I've been asked by many, "But don't you want to live forever/go to Heaven?". As if the desire for this translates to causing it to be… Continue

Hello, Think Atheist! I've finally plucked up the guts to join, after months of reading the blogs and forums and acquainting myself with atheism in general. I live in southwest Virginia, and for the most part I love it here. I'm in the middle of the Blue Ridge Mountains, and beautiful views abound. However, this is the same Virginia that houses Bob Marshall and Governor Bob McDonnell, and is perilously close to the Bible Belt, if it isn't part of it already.

The Atheist God

There are times when i want to say that there is a god. Don't get all disappointed just yet; here's what I mean.

God is not some omnipotent being that lives in the sky and knows ahead of time which of us he's going to punish. He didn't create the universe. He doesn't interfere with our lives with his noodley appendages, but he is real. God is a concept. God is a concept created by humans. God is what humans inserted into the unknown to explain it. God is what humans have…
