"But for the sake of some little mouthful of flesh, we deprive a soul of the sun and light and of that proportion of life and time it had been born into the world to enjoy."
- Plutarch

"It were much better that a sentient being should never have existed, than that it should have existed only to endure unmitigated misery."
- Percy Bysshe Shelley

"Non-violence leads to the highest ethics, which is the goal of all evolution. Until we stop harming all other living beings, we are still savages."
-Thomas Edison, inventor

" Humans who enslave, castrate, experiment on, and fillet other animals - have had an understandable penchant for pretending that animals do not feel pain. A sharp ... distinction between humans and "animals' is essential if we are to bend them to our will, make them work for us, wear  them, eat them - without any disquieting tinges of guilt and regret. It is unseemly of us who often behave so unfeelingly toward other animals, to contend that only humans can suffer... They are too much like us."
~ Carl Sagon & Dr. Ann Druyan from Shadows of Our Forgotten Ancestors, 1992

To someone with a mind like mine cannot afford to eat meat
by myself but it wouldn't surprise me if someone already said that...
'Nothing around matters. That's the reality. There is no concept of matter in Nature. We decide what matters, what I find important for you may no be. We may disagree. For me, other being matters, actually animals matters more than a human but that's my perception. That's what matter to me. So be it, let it be so...' but most of the time peope dislike, my apology in advanced. By myself too, but once again, it wouldn't surprise me if someone already said that...
The measure of civilization is the way in which we treat the weakest by Gandhi. He said something like that. I'm sorry I don't recall it right.
Yes, please do... I'd love to read it. Thanks Adriana.
"Truly man is the king of beasts, for his brutality exceeds theirs. We live by the death of others: we are burial places! I have from an early age abjured the use of meat, and the time will come when men such as I will look on the murder of animals as they now look on the murder of men."
~Leonardo da Vinci
Funny Vegetarian Quotes

FreeThinker: How would you describe your personal philosophy?

Pat Condell: I'm a vegetarian and I strongly support animal rights. (I hope that's OK with Jesus.)
I find it hard not to smile at religion's conceit that we're superior to animals on the basis that we have sould and they don't, when five minutes in a slaugterhouse would convince anyone that, if anything, it's animals who have souls and human beings who don't.

I became a vegetarian in 1976 while watching a deer being butchered.

Now I think it’s one of the best things I ever did.

I don’t know why everyone isn’t a vegetarian, but then I would say that. I’m sure Tony Blair doesn’t know why everyone isn’t a slimy double talking lawyer.

We become our beliefs and wear them like a suit of clothes, and it’s easy to imagine it’s all there is until you come face to face with reality, as I do whenever I visit a restaurant:
“There’s nothing on the menu for me. I’ll just have the salad.”
“Oh come on, surely you can have chicken. It’s got such a small brain it’s practically a vegetable.”

"Can you really ask what reason Pythagoras had for abstaining from flesh? For my part I rather wonder both by what accident and in what state of soul or mind the first man did so, touched his mouth to gore and brought his lips to the flesh of a dead creature, he who set forth tables of dead, stale bodies and ventured to call food and nourishment the parts that had a little before bellowed and cried, moved and lived. How could his eyes endure the slaughter when throats were slit and hides flayed and limbs torn from limb? How could his nose endure the stench? How was it that the pollution did not turn away his taste, which made contact with the sores of others and sucked juices and serums from mortal wounds?"
As long as Man continues to be the ruthless destroyer of lower living beings, he will never know health or peace. For as long as men massacre animals, they will kill each other. Indeed, he who sows the seed of murder and pain cannot reap joy and love.
- Pythagoras

Interesting how the quotes of Plutarch, da Vinci, and Edison seem to draw from Pythagoras, but I do not think any of them said it so succinctly and beautifully as Pythagoras.
"My body will not be a tomb to other creatures"
- Leonardo da Vinci
No quote, but regarding the recently popular "Caveman Diet" (another excuse to happily consume mass quantities of dead animals), this interesting article puts the human consumption of cereal grains MUCH further back in history. Those cavemen obviously loved their porridge!

Obviously, cereals have kept humans going for millenia.
"While we ourselves are the living graves of murdered animals, how can we expect any ideal living conditions on this earth? " Isadora Duncan
