Completely ignoring all Bronze Age mythology of Yahweh, William Lane Craig explains why the Flying Spaghetti Monster couldn't possibly be the cause of the universe. Really!?

Heather – I will repost the Thomas Paine quote on Theology here.

"The study of theology, as it stands in the Christian churches, is the study of nothing; it is founded on nothing; it rests on no principles; it proceeds by no authority; it has no data; it can demonstrate nothing; and it admits of no conclusion".

hahaha, at this point WLC is just debating himself. There doesn't even need to be an opponent anymore. It's like watching multiple personalities argue with one another.

<facepalm> So in the beginning he says intelligent design != god, but at the end he says intelligent design is "consonant with god"

He goes off the rails right at the beginning.  christians constantly claim the creator or designer is Jesus. The purpose of intelligent design is evangelism, not scientific clairity.

Actually, ID very deliberately avoids the mention of any god. It's all "Evolution doesn't work in this case, so something else is at play." The reason is that creationism was declared unconstitutional in courts. There is at least one book that was reprinted by simply removing any references to God. Of course the implication is there for anyone to see

@ Reg the fronkey

Paine has some classic stuff:

Science is the true theology.

One good schoolmaster is of more use than a hundred priests.

to argue with a man who has renouced his reason is like giving medicine to the dead.

Whenever we read the obscene stories, the voluptuous debaucheries, the cruel and tortuous executions, the unrelenting vindictiveness with which more than half the Bible is filled, it would be more consistant that we call it the word of a demon than the word of God. It is a history of wickedness that has served to corrupt and brutalize mankind; and, for my part, I sincerely detest it, as I detest everything that is cruel.

At 1:55 he says that he would argue that there are arguments for the existence of god. He has repeated them constantly for years. They are well rehearsed and articulated by him. They may sound intelligent and coherent to the theist mentality to which they are probably aimed at. I even considered them plausible enough at on stage. As Nelson said in a previous post he would tear many weak atheist arguments to shreds. However when you breakdown his arguments there is very little flesh on their bones. He is still arguing gods case and not even for deism in general but for a specific god. His arguments are the usually ones which have all been debunked. There must be a god because of the Moral Argument or the Big Bang must have had a cause. So his arguments are no longer deserving of (my) respect. I understand them but can see how they are wrong. I have spent time analysing them and have moved on because they no longer stand up. He starts out with the assumption that god exists and tries to rationalise this belief with argument. That is their undoing. He will continue to refine them and chuck in different words like “Neo-Darwinism” to convince himself or others that his Theology is proof of the existence of god. God exists; he can argue convincing for it, therefore god exists. As an Atheist (of many years) I can look at his arguments from his point of view but he cannot from mine. He would have to be an Atheist to do that. If he did, he would have realised their shortcomings and dropped them by now, and moved on. However as we explained to Kevin Harris who prepares his podcasts……Argument is NOT Evidence. There is NO Evidence whatsoever for any god to exist. None, only tired and boring theist arguments that are all debunked. That pasta has gone straight to my head.

Hearing the well spoken Bill Craig (is he related to James Bond?) discussing the FSM in his measured tones is great fun. He's so serious about it all and seems to miss the point that the FSM is a send-up. Great video!
