If the universe has always existed then there is the possibility that every possible variation of the universe has also existed at some point. Instead of a multiverse, a linear progression through all possible universes. Just taking the time dimension and redistributing it from all at once, to one after another.

The anthropic principle seems to me to be a conceit of hindsight and nothing more.
