Holy Fuck, I just want to slap them all.
Probably the best illustration of "Heads exploding" I've seen.
Too many absolute statements coming from Silver: "There is no" "No and neither do you" etc. This is a masterclass in how to turn people off atheists. Nice one David!
I think that the view that other people have on atheists will probably never change especially with this guy ranting on about how atheists are better than others and others beliefs. The way i see it if i was to be called up on fox i would totally accept the offer and i wouldn't be like this dumb ass and criticize every word or every belief that was brought to my attention. I mean come on who has the fucking right to say that they're wrong for what they believe in. To be honest alot of people who have their own beliefs are quite friendly. but anyway back to me being on fox i would simply tell them that its our right to believe what we want to believe im not going to discriminate myself or anyone else on that matter and we shouldnt try to push our beliefs on other people. o-O
My impression is that Silverman is going for a matter-of-fact, refusal to kowtow to religion sort of image; he just doesn't pull it off very well.
My biggest issue with him here is that he doesn't even seem to have properly answered the question. Everyone is capable of basic disaster preparations, regardless of their religious views. There may be some nuts out there who do nothing and count on God to protect them (the same types that try to pray away diseases without medical intervention), but I'd wager most don't have that sort of faith.
The question seemed to be, what do atheists do to cope with the emotional stress aspect of facing down a major crisis. In my case, I do my best to understand exactly what I'm facing, put things into perspective, then come to terms the the reality of the situation as best I understand it. If that process reveals any further prudent steps I should be taking, I will take them. It's mostly about mitigating uncertainty for me.
Good grief. Do you honestly believe that 99% of the Fox 'News' (or Business) viewers will be convinced or converted by this. Silverman, probably knowingly, was ambushed by these guys; the basic Fox News tactic w/ persons they do not like nor agree with. Invite a 'guest', propose a position then begin to yell at the guest and the guest's answers within 30 seconds. The woman's reaction was like a 5 yo at a scary movie. She had never seen an atheist and fully expected him to sprout horns.
This program was on FOX, epitome of slanted, jingoistic journalism, what else would you expect?
Mike0301 - "Knowingly ambushed" I think is an oxymoron. Of-course Silverman knew what to expect, like you said it is Fox news and he has been on Fox before. So the choice to react as he did was something that he planned as well. This is how he argues. He has done it time over in interviews. Do I think 99% of Fox viewers will be convinced or converted? Absolutely not by him, you are correct. But if another person, a person of quiet strength but clear knowledge was arguing the point, then yes, some maybe even a tiny percent may become fans and will have a desire to question things.
Here's a clip of Harris making his point the King of Fox, O'Riley, the difference between him and Silverman couldn't be more stark.
Yes, 'knowingly ambushed' is an oxymoron. Used for illustrative purposes only.
Theists always get defensive when Atheists say they don’t believe what the Theists believe in. If there is a hurricane coming I might stick my head up my ass and kiss it goodbye. Those Fox reporters won’t have to as theirs heads are way up there already!!
Knowing Fox... they probably just invited President Silverman just to make him look like an idiot and simultaneously fuel hatred for non-believers in their conservative viewers. He's been invited to be an exotic animal in the zoo for the conservative christians to goggle at and throw peanuts to.
Make no mistake... Fox isn't interested in atheist opinions. They never have been.
