"A heartbreaking letter, allegedly penned by an unsupportive father to his gay son, has gone viral in the blogosphere...".* Ana Kasparian and Cenk Uygur discuss the letter which was addressed to 'James' and eventually posted on Reddit. Can The Bible, specifically the Old Testament take on homosexuality, be used to justify anti-gay sentiment?
Comment by Kris Feenstra on August 11, 2012 at 4:43pm This is going to be a little incoherent, but given that my perspective is so far apart from this dad's, I really struggle to empathize with the dad's thinking here.
Setting aside the fact that I think Christian homophobia is nonsense, I get the fact that, in this father's eyes, homosexuality is an abomination. I try to think of some sort of comparable situation that would put me in a similar perspective. Let's say I had a son and found out he was a serial killer.
Is he a monster? Yes, I suppose so. Would I abandon him? I'm hard-pressed to think that I would. I mean, I can't agree with serial killings or condone the 'lifestyle', but that doesn't mean I would cut off all ties with my kin over it. It is possible that it would break my heart to see that my child was a killer whose only future was to be incarcerated for the remainder of his life, but still, I just can't see myself cutting ties so thoroughly.
