With the help of a holiday themed column from my local paper, I explain why it makes no sense to see the divine hand in everything that happens to us. If everything can be a sign, then nothing is. If everything has some higher meaning, then nothing does.
Comment by mary bottoms on December 24, 2011 at 3:18pm Yeah. If there are signs everywhere, the sunlight's a sign, the lack of sunlight's a sign, etc. Definitely, the cute tuxedo kitty's a sign.
Comment by Michelob on December 24, 2011 at 5:38pm The use of the word sign or אוֹת in Hebrew is not the same as the omens that Bill writes about. A sign, at least according to Torah, is an identification of Yahweh. First it is stated that something will happen that is out of man's control, then it occurs. This is why the plagues in Exodus are also 'signs'.
There is a similar usage of the word that also communicates identification through association. Keeping the Sabbath is a sign; living by the instructions is a sign. Again it is first declared, then it is happens.
What Bill calls a sign is... a retroactive sign? Or just a misuse of the word.
