Stoning people still happens today in the name of god.

I agree with Heathers viewpoint... It is very frustrating that religious people explain/justify their actions in magical words or nonsense phrases or quotes from what ever religious text they rely on.
Kind regards, Martin (angry danish atheist)

Comment by Heather Henderson on May 16, 2011 at 5:09pm Heather- I think there is plenty to be angry about- and I agree with your points.
But I believe people who regard the Bible as the word of God, for the most part, are unable and/or unwilling to really think for themselves and provide an argument without the Bible (even if the Bible was written by racist, sexist, homophobic, misogynistic, patriarchal, uninformed, narrow minded men and is full of contradictions).
And for those who argue the New Testament trumps the Old, they likely haven't read the New Testament very carefully but have cherry picked the "nice" verses to support their "nice" beliefs (while failing to recognize some of the horrible verses and implications of the New Testament, the mental bondage created by the New and the Old Testaments, and the mental prison they call Christianity).
The sad reality, that many Christians will likely never come to see as we do, is the evidence that Jesus even existed is weak. Everything written about him is hearsay, and most of the things written about his life are borrowed mythology. But I can grant them the assumption that he did. Even so, when the New Testament is carefully read, one can make an easy case that Jesus and his father/God (who are really the same being, so the myth goes) were not really the supremely nice and loving characters Christians make them out to be- the examples are right there in the black and white "words of God" in the New Testament as well as the Old. The New Testament is really no better than the Old, when all is said and done, when it comes to the "character" of the Christian god.
Your intelligence is an asset with respect to helping the atheist cause and preventing this world from being ruled by religion and falling into another dark age (which I believe is not out of the realm of possibility). Keep up the good work (preferably as peacefully as possible, but I know it is extremely hard to maintain peace and calm when confronted with the obvious ignorance, irrationality and/or stupidity religion perpetuates).
