His point seems to be: 'I don't care if it works or not, because abstinence-only education is in line with my own prejudices. Whether it works or not is irrelevant in the face of how many of my constituents support it.'

 

That's a scary way to do politics.

Wow! This man is not intelligent--not in the least. He should at a minimum see that Texas should stop paying for a failing program. This is what happens with pious compartmentalization of a mind, even the mind of a parrot. The man is stuck in a then /then loop, and can't process a 'what if' for giggles or grins. It's true that he makes George Jr. look like the smart one. How's that for goose-bump generating rhetoric.

 

Bailey- You're right of course, but even further along that vein is the obvious handicap presented by his God goggles and the lack of alternatives viewable around the periphery from that perspective.

He's partially correct. Abstinence itself works, sure, but abstinence education obviously doesn't. Kids are going to have sex if they want to have sex. Period. They should be informed about the best ways to go about it though. But because Mr Religion doesn't want to "promote" sex, these kids are screwed if they don't seek out education in other ways. He should be legally removed for that.

Brian - absolutely right. The god-goggles are the whole source of the prejudice here. It's the same mindset that allows preachers to feel they have the authority to tell women they must act like they're already married at all times, lest they have sex and become unclean and slutty. The whole idea of abstinence in this religious framework is based on a woman's worth being equated to the state of her hymen. It's frightening that this attitude is still so common today, even when it's dressed up in modern terminology.
