Interesting video about the rise a secularism in The United States VIA The Young Turks.
How many Christians do you know who insist they aren't religious? Did they control for this habitual abuse of the language?
Apparently if you dig deeper, 5% are atheists.
He is right, we are growing in numbers, especially my generation, yet we barely have power and we are still fighting for basic acceptance from our own families and friends
Don't get me wrong, atheism/agnosticism/rationality are undoubtedly growing and that's a good thing. I just don't believe 20 percent of society has given up on woo.
Any type of growth is good growth the way I see it. The number really doesn't seem all that outlandish to me though, especially being from the younger generation. Most people I run into on a day to day basis have not religious affiliation. With the older generation dying out and the younger generations having more access to the information that we do (science in general, space exploration, and the like) less and less people are affiliating themselves with organized religion. (I could be wrong, the video could be total b.s. but I like The Young Turks and most of the time they're spot on)
Have no* not have not religious affiliation.
Get these numbers up. Atheist Census.
