This makes me recall something I have heard a few times. That Satan's greatest trick is to making people think he doesn't exist. To me the god concept would need need the ultimate boogey man to scare people into believing.

Historically speaking Satan, or more properly, Hell, provided exactly that. Hell is the perfect stick to God's carrot.
