Standford University Professor of Neurology and Neurological Sciences Robert Sapolsky on the Psychology, History, and Evolution of Religion.  I recommend all of his videos on Youtube.

Very interesting. I often think about the origin of religion and what were those people thinking. Mental illness does come to mind.

Very interesting; I'd been thinking of religion in terms of memetic drift, but that mental disorders can, under the right circumstances, contribute greatly to religion is simultaneously fascinating and disturbing.  Possibly even explicative.

Actually, some of the core Christian beliefs were decided on by committee. Early Christian churches were highly diverse and sometimes believed in radically different things. Then there were councils that decided that they were heresies and wiped them out
