This seems terribly inconsistent which is oddly a consistent behavior with Catholics. First off, why is the nun making life or death decisions for another human being (the pregnant mother)? Secondly, can't she just repent and be pardoned regardless of what she does, how often and when?

Kris -

You are right right that the only consistency in Catholic doctrine is consistently being in consistent. But, as for your latter question, actually the answer is "no." The church has declared abortion as something worthy of excommunication, meaning that if you have done done or give one to someone else that you will be banned from the church. The really funny thing is that their logic here is that abortion is wrong because it is murder. However, murder will not get you an automatic excommunication. In fact you can rape and kill dozens of children, adults, whatever. All can be forgiven except abortion. I know that society values youth but the Catholics take it to the extreme.
