Great kids and very bright.  The greatest gift that we can give our kids is the ability to think critically and not to take things on the basis of authority, nor to be pressured by their peers into conforming to things that they don't believe in.  "They all say stuff that doesn't really make sense to me" - well done, great thinking!

Hi Jay,

Thanks for posting. I have two small kids as well. I'm curious, how did you or do you present this to your kids. My feeling is that I will show them all the creation myths and teach them how to reason and think for themselves but not push them in one direction. When they are old enough to decide for themselves, they will do so. I would also be interested to know how you deal with Santa, Easter Bunny, Tooth Fairy etc?

Something in the line of Richard Dawkins' letter to his 10-year-old daughter is also not a bad way to start!

I have 2 teenageers (17 and 19) and a 7-year-old.  I've always tried never to impose my own view (atheist and vegetarian!) but always to say "this is what I believe, but other people believe this...". 

However, all are atheist vegetarians, so I guess I've indoctrinated them, by osmosis, if not overtly. They all know, though, that they are free to make their own choices and will not be criticised for it, and we talk about that frequently, which I think is the best way!

Well I myself am 17, and I am also number 3 in my class. I am atheist, and thinking back through my childhood, I seem to have always been atheist! Lol. Well basically I just never went to church and have been a very, very skeptical and logical person since very little. In an example of my freethinking, while all my classmates did the EXACT SAME science project, my prject was over hydroponics, which was very high level for a 5th grader compared to diaper absorption. But that's jut how I was, very scientific and very logical and skeptical on society's "norm". So when raising your own children I would just push them more towards the amazing aspects of science and math and they will be able to see religion as I did: dumb, time wasting, and not as fun or mind blowing as science. :D
