This was when I was in Iran last year and the time of "Ashura" - a barbaric Islamic tradition forced upon society in which the vast majority of people don't ...

I don't think you understand the definition of the word torture. It would have to at least be unpleasant to fall into the realm of torture and some of the kids actually seem mildly amused. It didn't look like they cut the sheep's head right off, I thought they just cut the throat deeply. Have you never seen animals slaughtered before? Are you a vegan?
The symbolic self-flagellation is creepy though - the one kid is kind of dancing as he proudly takes part and that's pretty damn twisted if you ask me.
I think most of us would call it indoctrination and torture - as young children should never be subjected to such vile. And the head was cut off. IT doesn't matter if the kids "look mildly amused" as they have become desensitized by attending such events since they were born. Just look at Mostafa's comments below on this as he had to go through this experience as a young child.
I thought torture was something you could get behind. Or maybe these kids should be exposed to the much milder forms of torture like waterboarding or typing them up with electrical wire and beat them to a pulp while electrocuting their testicles.
I don't get why you wouldn't show much worse manifestations of this weird ritual. There is plenty of material of auto-mutilating shi'ite crazies.
Even on leftie central: Huffpopics.
I kind of like the music though. It's hypnotizing, soothing in a way.
Yeah, it's mixed up religious indoctrination alright but certainly not torture. If the kids are just amused by it all because of being indoctrinated then that still doesn't make it torture. If you are so horrified by a sheep getting it's throat cut then I recommend you never attend a rodeo. In most of Canada all this stuff could easily pass for a secular argri-cultural festival. That music is almost as bad as Billy Rae Cyrus. Hey, is he related to Cyrus the Great?
