In times gone by, unwed mothers were sent away as they were a humiliation. Before that, they couldn't vote. before that, they couldn't own property in their own right. Before that girls not perceived as virgins before marriage were considered spoilt goods.
I appreciate people don't like the idea of potential children dying. However, it seems to be taken way out of proportion. People don't like getting abortions. Its a difficult decision and a traumatic one. It isn't a gateway to a hedonistic life of free love without consequences which seems to be how it is framed sometimes. I really think it is a matter of control. I think it is trying to hold onto some of those old beliefs which put women's rights at a slighter lower level that either men or children.
I also question the honesty of the belief too. The demographic that are feverishly anti-abortion seem to be fine with the current wars the US finds itself in. Only half factiously, I wonder whether that is why they are anti-abortion? We need more troops!
Also, I just wanted to put my 2 cents worth in about misinterpreting the bible.
I've always been fascinated, even in the days where I believed, how it is possible that God, the omnipotent, all-seeing, all-knowing God of absolutely everything could produce a book (i'm thinking christian here, but it is applicable to them all) that was so open to misinterpretation. Seriously. How hard for a God can it be to not be ambiguous?
