Small town IN, seem to be alone hard to find Atheist my age!
I am new here. Looking for folks in North Western New Jersey and New York City. Especially interested in meeting anyone active in progressive politcs, activists who adhere to the Occupy model of consensus............I would love to hear from you!
G'Day Robin and welcome,
I spent about a year in total at Fort Monmouth near Eatontown, NJ and came to enjoy NJ a lot; however that was 7-months or so in 1966 and 1971 attending fixed crypto and fixed cyphony repair school respectfully when I was a "Spook" doing my time in green with the US Army Security Agency. I gave 7-years of what was normally the most productive period of a young man's life upholding and defending the US Constitution that for all intents and purposes trashed beginning with the efforts of Mad King George 43 and so far continued, to my everlasting dismay and disgust Obama. It's time, no, way past time that progressives in America occupied everything, including the Oval Office!
At least in that part of the nation like-minded progressive and godless people should be far easier the find then here in deepest, darkest Wise County, Texas. Yes, "Wise" in conjunction with basically everywhere in Texas is an oxymoron. For the dolts here it's spelled "oxymoran"!
I've never been a "joiner". Was a bit surprised to be presented with the collection plate before I even sat down.
This is a good and important time for atheists to make contact with each other.
We may well be one of the fastest growing groups in America, and hopefully will have much more of a voice in politics and the public arena in general.
Indeed "we" are one of the fastest-growing groups in America, but only because we are so far behind in finding our own voices and using them. The Freedom From Religion Foundation, headed by former Christian fundamentalist pastor and musician Dan Barker, whom I was fortunate to hear and to meet at a University of Texas, Denton, TX address, is doing invaluable work in getting atheists and the concept of atheism in America's collective face. I encourage every atheist and non-believer to become members of that fine organization and help to take all of us forward into the future as collectively "we" are the last hope for an America rational and reality-based future.
One point I missed. Atheists need a "Stonewall moment" just as in Greenwich Village in 1969 when the Gay Rights movement was finally spurred into action and the concept of Gay Liberation was born. I suggest the coming election in reaction to the bible-pounding Republican'T Party attempt to set up a pseudo-theocracy in America should they win as heavily as they did in in 2010. All of us from the non-religious segment of our country should be n the streets and at the polls, and each of us should strive to recruit as many like-minded citizens as possible and if necessary drive them to the polling place where ever it is. Speak out, act up, show them we're real and ready to show them outside of Christianity we are steadily growing and already are larger as a group than the religious community.
