Comment by Kairan Nierde on November 9, 2011 at 5:40pm All of the NT texts on Jesus were written 50 to several hundred years after his death (or, if you don't believe in the historical Jesus, then think of it as the time after the teachings began to spread once the Jesus myth became established). I think the hell/salvation story was created to explain why the "Messiah" (a God-figure encumbered by a mortal body) had to die. Similarly, I think the second coming theology developed to account for the deliverance prophesies of the OT, and the fact that Christians still lived under persecution after their "Messiah" had come and gone.
