Comment by Luis Contreras on September 10, 2011 at 2:38am this is something ive thought about and it gets me angry when i think about it. If the dark ages never existed does it mean we could have been colonizing other planets right now with a life expectancy of 200+? If that truly is a possibility then yes i mad or have i got it wrong?
Comment by Michael on September 11, 2011 at 1:07am I'm not sure the Dark Ages can be blamed entirely upon Christianity. Not to say it didn't help, but Roman civilization had been stagnating long before, which is precisely the appeal Christianity gave people when things were on the long slide downhill. From what I understand it's more like the slump of the Roman Empire led to Christianity taking hold, which coupled with the collapse later caused the Dark Ages. The monasteries in fact preserved much of the literature, particularly those in Ireland, while at the same time other things were burned. Later the fall of Muslim Spain yielded many Greek works lost to Christendom, helping to spur the Renaissance. Safe to say it was complicated...
