I've featured this.

I feel this video does a good job of setting people's minds on the right track regarding evolution. Before people can deny or defend evolutionary theory based on individual facts, they need to first understand what the theory is actually stating (or not stating, as the case may be).

Thanks Kris -  it covers all the "buzz words" used in the subject and correctly explains them. e.g. mutations.

This is a good video to visualize the process.

That (the original posted video) is a good way to put you and a (reasonably intellegent) creationist on the same ground as to what it is you are actually arguing over.

Many of the comments creationists make reflect a misunderstanding of what evolution is, and I have to tell them "if evolution actually said that dogs could give birth to kittens [a relatively far out example that I have seen] I would have to agree with you that such a theory is absurd.  But that's not what it says!"  If your interlocutor has any honesty or curiosity, you now have an opportunity to correct their misconceptions as to what it says.  Then, at least, there's a chance that you will be arguing about the same topic.

Arghhhhh see what you made me do?  After watching that great vid, I saw others appear in the final panel, and I clicked and viewed and clicked and viewed and I've spent over an hour here instead of doing... other stuff.  What fun!

EXCELLENT!!!  This is one of the best brief explanations of evolution I've ever seen. While it only covers the broadest outlines of the theory, it does cover everything that is necessary for the non-scientist to understand.

Okay, I bit and watched the vid. I see some logic as in dog breeding, but it stops there.

Yes, the earth and it's inhabitants evolve to some degree based upon changes in the earth, or changes from what we have ingested (poisons, HFCS, etc). Is that why women's lips are getting bigger and fuller???

to call that evolution is a misnomer. It is more like adjusting to the environment. But if people feel better calling it evolution, then to each his own. no harm, no foul.

If science is right, and we evolved from monkeys and apes, then why are there still some monkeys and apes that didn't evolve??

Science is being used to prove that God doesn't exist by saying that we evolved from monkeys and apes and we are stupid enough to not only fall for it, but not even question it???

Yet even if we are to believe it has something to do with selective breeding (like dogs to get a certain trait), then WHAT was bred with monkeys and apes to get humans??

Scientific THEORIES cannot be based on facts. Why? Because there is no documented ancient proof (actual physical written evidence of breeding programs) of the selective breeding that is presumed to have taken place. It is all hype. Of course, if there IS documented proof from a billion years ago, please, by all means show me!! I truly would welcome studying it.

Why are we so ready to jump on the evolution bandwagon without actual empirical proof?

Truly, who on this earth has that experience??? Everyone we know who has presented the so-called "facts" did not exist in the time they allegedly say these things took place.

We even blindly trust NASA to tell us things about space. Why? We blindly accept our calendar system of 365 and 1/4 days. WHY????

Truly, who can prove anything about anything??

Truly, who can prove anything about anything?

If you are saying a statement like this, then maybe the best thing for you to do is simply live a care-free life. That statement means that no matter what we do, we will always fail and never understand anything and should just stop trying. Why even continue trying to continue to worry when you believe even yourself has no knowledge of what you are talking about?

After reading what you just wrote, you make all sorts of assumptions without seeming to have much of knowledge about these scientific topics. NASA is the reason for why we are able to communicate via the internet and science is not trying to disprove any gods. Science, by it's proper definition, ignores any regards of the supernatural and only focuses on the natural world. Scientific theories aren't the same thing as theories. Theories in science are actually accepted because there are many things observed that indicate a particular phenomena to be true. You can come up with any idea that contradicts a scientific theory, but in order to be valid, it must be tested and observed in the natural world. Anything that doesn't meet those requirements are dismissed until either it can be tested. Science isn't perfect, but it's the best thing we got in explaining the natural world.

Are you possibly proposing that we should stop science because it is offensive? Should we stop because it hinders people from establishing absurd claims that are not supported by fact?

I really don't know what to think about you, but you seem to just be desperate at this point. We have many ways of figuring stuff from the past. We don't always need documented evidence from an ancient point in time to infer what may have occurred during that time.

Comment by S. Graham on June 18, 2014 at 2:56pm

If the word "theory" is different in the scientific community as opposed to the dictionary definition, then why use it all? If a scientific theory is a proven thing, then why not just call it a fact?

and WOW, you so totally missed my point.

Aren't you the one who believes in abortion? Right? Yet you are  man if what your profile says is correct. Interesting.

Heh. Well put.

If science is right, and we evolved from monkeys and apes, then why are there still some monkeys and apes that didn't evolve??

Science doesn't say we evolved from the current species of other primates. It says that current primates (including humans) branched off from a common ancestor in the past. We did not evolve from apes so much as we still are apes, like the other members of our family (Hominidae) who diverged genetically at some point in the past and developed in different directions.

Science is being used to prove that God doesn't exist by saying that we evolved from monkeys and apes and we are stupid enough to not only fall for it, but not even question it???

Despite what some atheists and theists say, this is not the case. Science, roughly, is the process of exploring and describing  the natural universe. Science indicates we evolved from a common ancestor because that is what the best available evidence indicates. While some humans may find significance in how this contradicts literal interpretations of Genesis or other religious viewpoints, science itself doesn't have such a goal.

Yet even if we are to believe it has something to do with selective breeding (like dogs to get a certain trait), then WHAT was bred with monkeys and apes to get humans??

We aren't to believe that. That has nothing to do with what the video was saying. I'm sorry to fail you here, but I don't even know where to begin with what you wrote save for to say it has nothing to do with what science indicates. It's a complete misunderstanding of the video and evolutionary theory.

Scientific THEORIES cannot be based on facts. Why? Because there is no documented ancient proof(actual physical written evidence of breeding programs) of the selective breeding that is presumed to have taken place.

Again, when talking about evolutionary theory, no such programs are believed to have taken place with a few exceptions of humans breeding animals (pets, farm animals and work animals, mostly).

Everyone we know who has presented the so-called "facts" did not exist in the time they allegedly say these things took place.

These things are still taking place, and those that have taken place have left their marks in our genetic record. That is to say our current genetics show our links to other species. There is also physical evidence in the form of fossil record. While our methods are not flawless, they have a given error margin. There is no binary 'proven' or disproven' but rather there is a gamut of how strong the supporting evidence is for a given model.

Just speaking generally, however, not everything needs to be witnessed first hand to be proven. If a lab worker runs a paternity test, she can prove that a man is or is not the father of a child without having directly witnessed that man impregnating the mother. Even if impregnation happened before that lab technician was born the science works the same way.
