MYFOXNY.COM - Why would the owners of the Empire State Building deny the late Mother Teresa the honor of having the lights turned on for what would have been her 100th birthday in August?
After waiting for days without a response, Fox 5 went to the building's management offices Wednesday to get an answer. We were turned away at the door.
Anthony Malkin of Malkin Holdings, which owns the building, did issue a statement. While acknowledging that the Empire State Building has a tradition of lightings for certain religious holidays Malkin said: "As a privately owned building, the Empire State Building has a specific policy against any other lighting for religious figures or requests by religions and religious organizations."
The Catholic League quickly said the building's managers were lying.
"Why is it when John Paul II died in 2005 they extinguished the lights in his honor?" said Bill Donohue.
Past recipients of the floodlight honor include: The Simpsons in 2007, Mariah Carey in 2008, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2009, and the 60th anniversary of Communist China five months later.
The Catholic League, who did most of the responding and planning, said it plans demonstrations.
"The next step now is the demonstration. I have all summer long," Donohue said. "We're going to get thousands of people into the streets."
Some City Council members are calling the building management's decision a "snub" of the nun who worked for the poor. Councilman Peter Vallone Jr. introduced a resolution urging the owner to reconsider.
