It's not uncommon here to have someone killed with an Ak on market day in the middle of town. The damage US drug policy does is tragic. Thats not to say it's not doing a great deal of damage in the states as well. Having watched this up close I can say it is about the only solution to the violence we suffer in almost all of Central America. Not just pot , legalize it all.
The Zeta's (Mexican drug gangs) have invaded northern Guatemala and are starting to spread out in the rest of this country. They bring a different kind of violence with them our local narcos usually only kill each other or people that cause them trouble. The Mexicans are guns for hire and will take on jobs outside of the narcotics trade. This is a relatively recent development I think due to the pressure put on them form Calderon. We are seeing for the fist time in the 7 years I have been here , heads being thrown in front of building as a terror tactic. All tied in some way to the drugs trade. Legalize it all and take the profit out of it. The narcos that be can transition just like the Kennedy's did after prohibition ended in the states.
