Of course there is already a ground zero mosque and has been in continuous operation since 1970.

The radical christian right (or those seeking to manipulate that group for political gain) has turned this thing into a divide and conquer propaganda tool.....

We take away one groups freedom we take away ALL of our freedom. Our greatest strength as a nation also happens to be our most exploitable weakness...but take it away and we become LESS than what we were. I'm talking about freedom.

I wouldn't shed a tear if ALL the churchs, mosques, temples, synagogues, etc were turned into affordable housing, office buildings, and community centers....BUT... I support the freedom of those who believe differently than I do to build where its lawful for them to build.

Are we going to turn this into a religious thing instead of a terrorist thing? This is what the christian right wants to do.....Hell thats what the terrorists want to do. They want to stir up the populace to start a holy war.

I disagree with almost everything in this video.
Everything this islamophobe said about Islam can be said about Christianity just as well.
The evils of the world aren't committed just by Islam, but by religion as a whole (except for Judaism and Buddhism perhaps). If anything, Christianity is probably the deadliest religion in the history of the world.
But the point is different - if you ban one religion's place of warship, you should ban all of them. If you don't, don't ban any of them.
Anything else is a double-standard, and that's just plain stupid.

I completely disagree with this. And completely support the mosque. Muslims didn't do that. A group of muslim terrorists did. Its like complaining about a church being built around anywhere a christian murdered someone. Which of course no one would do. Maybe they don't want to move it to a different location because they want to prove a point.

For the reasons that others like Chelsea and Elad have given, I think Pat Condell is wholly wrong on this issue. Personally I think he's an idiot, and I'm a little sad to have him as a fellow atheist.

Agreed with pretty much everything the rest of you guys've said. I was originally uncomfortable with the idea of the GZ mosque, because I was fed misinformation about it (probably on purpose). I was under the impression that it was a mosque (y'know, minarets, monument to Allah's conquest of the West, statue of Bin Laden flipping the bird.... okay, maybe not that last part), being built on the site where the WTC was. I opposed it because I don't think a mosque or church or synagogue or any worship house should be built on the spot where the towers stood; I think it should ideally be turned into a museum and/or memorial park. But that's really beside the point.

Once I found out what and where it is going to be, I was angry because I felt that I'd been used to push an Islamophobic agenda that, if successful, would ultimately represent the beginning of the end of certain freedoms for non-Christian Americans. Shame on this guy for falling into that trap so willingly and hatefully.

Pat couldn't be more wrong. How far away does this center need to be in order not to be an "insult"? Horrible logic gone wrong, Pat.

Wisp, you hit the nail on the head. That's how it was for me, as well. Some people are STILL stuck there, because they already were blindly anti-Islam and are comfortable hating Park51, the imam, and the entire concept of the comm. center.

And isn't Pat Condell giving into emotional argument regarding people being offended at the proximity to Ground Zero? What kind of an atheist is he, anyway? lol
Comment by Chelsea Sherman on August 29, 2010 at 12:56am
Wisp, I thought that at first too. The way they talk about it (especially on fox news) you would think they were actually building it on ground zero.

Mr. Condell, have you ever even considered that they plan on building an Islamic Community Center near the site of a national tragedy as a message of peace and acceptance, considering they are going to allow people of all faiths? If it's a triumphalist monument, I really don't think they did a good job.

And you're wrong about Islam and "Justice, progresss, tolerance and the dignity of human beings." You reveal both your ignorance and your willingness to dismiss others arguments without listening when you call it a "boldfaced lie" and repeat your BS. Islam was the bed of cultue for hundreds of years, while Europe was wallowing in its own filth. It is the reason why we have (in their current forms) Aristotle, Alegebra, Geometry, Chemistry, and many other things which are still important in the modern world.

Stop being hateful you bigot.
