Anyone who I have ever showed this video to has spent 15 minutes with their jaw dropped.

Yes, many of those thinkers to whom I owe my mental freedom were religious, like Newton, a Christian, who believed God made the Earth but who then showed me ...

Restricted from playback.

Good video though.

One of the best videos I know that illustrate the 'spiritual' feeling that most people associate to religion and a personal god. It is called awe.

This is a fantastic video, Matthew.  Thanks for sharing it.

Imho, this is probably the best way to open a theists eyes.

They are not readily won over by arguement, but want to think they found truth on their own.

It is all right there in the sky before them.

Like Sam Harris says, "If one day we do find intellegent life in the universe, they will be even less impressed with the Bible than human Atheists are."

The numbers. The scale.

The pretty numbers and scales.

Ahhh.

I love this clip.

In addition I'd like to draw attention to it's emphasis on space rather than time.

When considering the space we humans/life  occupy, the clip shows just how

small we are relative to the size of the universe. But contrast that with time.

Now, before quoting ages in millions or billions of years, try imagining a full rotation

of our own Milky Way.. it's about 200 Million Years. 1 revolution = 1 Galactic Year (GY).

Now, in GY's ...

* ~ 40   GY: Big Bang
* ~ 39   GY: Birth of the Milky Way
* 0      GY: Birth of the Sun
* 4      GY: Oceans appear on Earth
* 5      GY: Life begins
* 7      GY: Bacteria appear
* 10     GY: Stable continents appear
* 16     GY: Multicellular organisms appear
* 17.8   GY: Cambrian explosion
* 19.6   GY: K?T extinction event
* 19.999 GY: Appearance of modern humans
* 20     GY: Present day

ie All time from Big Bang to now approx 60 GY's.

In space we feel pretty insignificant.
You want to feel significant?
Befriend some primordial slime.

In time, humans have been around 0.001 out of 60 GY's
        or 4000 generations
        or 1/1000000th of all time
In time, life has been around 15 out of 60 GY's
        or 1/4 of all time!

If you want to feel significant,
you have to cosy up to your very, very, very distant
cousins: slimes, bacteria, Eukaryotes
and welcome them as kin.

Look after your (my) family.

Incredible video - thank you for sharing it.  In response to it, I decided to rewrite Genesis to reflect a book that paints a deity that is actually greater than the cosmos.
