Here's the reason, I suspect, that many Muslims blame the US for production and release of that film:

When you've lived your life in a country where the government controls the media, you tend to assume that that's the way it is everywhere. WE know that if the US tried to shut down YouTube across the country, there would be an unimaginable 1st amendment uproar, which the government would lose, but that kind of freedom is unknown in most Islamic countries.

That's an interesting point, Archae.  Just a reminder of the importance of remembering the other person's context.
