I think Pascal Boyer is the the most lucid of anyone working in his area. Parts of Religion Explained gave me headaches because my brain had to work so hard to assemble the information -- but it was well worth the effort.
I'd be glad to do a podcast at some point. The easiest way to get a response out of me is at valerietarico at hotmail.
Thank you -- glad you liked the chapter in the Loftus book. It is, of course, oversimplified. But it's a lot closer to reality than the explanations religion offers for the same phenomena ;).
well, I had already taken like 7 philosophy classes, including logic. I just did not understand how elegant evolution was and its implications about how the universe works. in other words, I didn't have my Bayesian lenses in yet.
Have I ever told you why I am an atheist? It isn't because i read Graham Oppy. It is because I read Richard Dawkin's books on evolution and Christopher Hitchen's book God is Not Great. Together they showed me that there are plausible natural explanations and that God doesn't lead to great society. All of the theology and philosophy I read is an after thought.
I am well, thanks. I have been working on a graduate project on the rebirth of intellectualism in Europe in the 11th century (following the retaking of Toledo). What have you been up to?
Its a 1,100 page book about all of the mechanisms and laws of the universe. Everything from thermodynamics to the anthropic principle. I really like it, which is a pleasant surprise for me (I think Penrose is dead wrong when it comes to consciousness). How is Schellenberg's book?
