Plenty of our words have been stolen. Anti vaxxers call themselves skeptics for example. And the religious often turn everything on its head definining up as down to squeeze reality around their chosen dogma.
An interesting example I came across recently was "pro science" which should mean supportive of the scientiic method and the evidence based approach. I heard it disputed by someone claiming that pro science shouldn't mean against baseless belief. It is a term that can stretch all the way down to "of course I'm pro science, I'm using a laptop to browse the internet."
Being happy to accept the fruits of science and jettison the method makes no sense.
A word that we need to steal is faith. I think Christopher Hitchens began the process.
“If you call someone a man of faith it seems, for the moment, like a compliment. I'd like that to change.”
I think you can tell from the way believers have started complaining they are being oppressed that this change is happening around us.
Faith is becoming a dirty word.
