WTF?... Registered sex offender to be ordained as a minister

I'm working from home today and I flipped the tube to CNN.

Xtians wonder why atheists are "so angry". This could be just one of so many reasons.

A Louisville, Kentucky church that welcomes gay and transgender worshipers is planning to ordain a registered sex offender as a minister. Mark Hourigan was charged back in 1998 with sodomizing, sexually abusing and intimidating an 11-year-old boy. He pleaded guilty to a lesser charge, served time in prison and agreed not to serve as a leader in any church where he would have contact with children. The head pastor of City of Refuge Worship Center admits it’s the first time he’s heard of a church in the United States ordaining someone who is registered for life as a sex offender, but he says the man in question has changed and deserves forgiveness. Some worry Hourigan could be a threat to the children who gather at the church for weekly Sunday school. But the church says Hourigan will not have any contact with children.

Maybe they've learned nothing from the Catholic priest scandals

Since people do not choose what excites them sexually, it's difficult to believe that someone could successfully change it.

I agree with you Doug.

I agree with Kenndy about agreeing with Doug.

Wouldn't it be nice if pedophile priests wore a different hat or something? The collar identifies the basic delusional mindset but other aberrations would be nice to know in advance.

@ Jeff - They could wear a scarlett "P"? I like that!

They have 2 improvements over the catholics: 1, they're not pretending he hasn't done anything wrong. 2) They're not allowing him to have further contact with children.

@Natalie And the occasional person who is falsely convicted and executed? Just collateral damage, the price we pay to kill the bad guys?

Rape and pedophilia are horrible crimes, and ones that should be treated with extreme seriousness. But I don't think any crime should have a mandatory death sentence, if only because that is one punishment that cannot be revoked. If someone is going to be executed for a crime, it had best be one that there is as close to zero chance that they are innocent of as possible. People can be released from jail. They cannot be brought back from the dead.

@Dave - Except Jesus.

And Lazarus.

And all the other zombies in the Bible.

Other than that, I'm with ya!

@Reggie Do you really want to risk zombie pedophiles roaming the land?

I see the potential for a new web-comic strip.
Zombie Pedophiles!!

Seriously, though. Did anyone else notice the very first line??
"A Louisville, Kentucky church that welcomes gay and transgender worshipers is planning to ordain a registered sex offender as a minister."

As if the fact that they welcome gays and transgenders worshipers must be the reason why a convicted rapist is allowed in.
Everyone knows that gays and trannies love rapists!
Once you let the gays in, it's a slippery slope.

I'm as disgusted by the journalism here as I am by the story itself.

((And I'm all for reversible chemical castration in rape/pedo convictions. Death is just a bad, expensive policy. ))
