LAKELAND | Atheists of Florida announced its intention this morning to file a federal lawsuit against the City of Lakeland, challenging its
practice of opening its meetings with prayer.

The director of the Lakeland chapter of Atheists of Florida, EllenBeth Wachs, said the organization would file the lawsuit against

the city and Mayor Gow Fields in U.S. District Court in Tampa.

Wachs said the lawsuit would challenge the city's invocation policy on
several grounds, including claims that it violates the separation of
religion and state and freedom of speech provisions of the First
Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

Wachs said further details would be forthcoming later in the day.

They should let the atheists open with a 'prayer' of their own.

"Dear Natural Selection,
Thank you for taking billions of years to arrange the molecules that are uniquely me.
I'm so glad you didn't short cut the process down to seven days and make some subpar, backwards thinking generic knock off. Seriously. Have you heard about the Adam and Eve series? These folks don't even know how to plan for offspring. They just procreate, then rely on the government when they can't care for their pro-creative endeavors.
Thank you for medicine based on education, not doctrine written by goat herders 2,000 years ago. Thank you for vaccines created off of the 'theory' of evolution. They work so well keeping our population alive, even for those that disbelieve in their magic.
Most of all, thank you for not being a douche bag and chaining us to dogma. Peer reviewed science is a living entity, not a dusty tome. "

the other way to stop them would be to include all religions, one day open the meetings with a prayer from quaran, then bhagvad gita, and so on......i am pretty sure the conservative christians would be estatic....

@sukhdeep, The policy of the city government is exactly that, however, they have only invited "christian leaders" to lead the prayer.
