(AP)  COLUMBIA, S.C. - A Spartanburg County woman has been charged with felony animal cruelty, accused of hanging her nephew's pit bull with an electrical cord and burning its body after the dog chewed on her Bible, authorities said Monday.

When questioned by police and animal control officers, Miriam Smith told them the female dog named "Diamond" was a "devil dog" and she feared it might harm neighborhood children, according to an incident report from the county's Environmental Enforcement Department.

Smith, 65, was arrested Sunday and remains in the Spartanburg County jail. Bond has not been set. Officials said she doesn't have an attorney yet and there was no phone number listed for her Pacolet Mills home.

She faces 180 days to five years in prison if convicted.

Authorities said the 1-year-old dog was kept outside on a chain and chewed the Bible that had been left on Smith's porch. The dog's remains were found under a pile of dried, cut grass. Part of the orange cord was still around the dog's neck and a smell of kerosene still hung in the air, the animal control officer wrote in her report.

The dog was killed about two weeks ago when Smith's nephew was forced to spend several days away from home because of winter weather in the area, authorities said.

Smith is the first person is Spartanburg County to face a felony charge under South Carolina's tougher animal cruelty law, said Jaime Nelson, director of the county's Environmental Enforcement Department.

Smith's mental state will likely affect what kind of penalties she faces, Nelson added. He said he was stunned by how flat the woman's emotions sounded as she recounted on tape what happened to the dog.

"She just acted like - what's done has been done," Nelson said.

How "Christian" of her.  I suppose she believes it was "god's will"--but then again, it would have also been "god's will" that the dog chewed her bible in the first place, as "...Every decision is from the Lord" (Prov. 6:33).....so she should be blaming her god for deciding that the dog should chew her bible, not the dog!!!

She is a fracking monster thats what and i hope she will rot for at least 5 years as that seems to be maximum penalty sadly enough.

The poor dog must have suffered so much, and all because of a stupid fairytale book :(

I normally refrain from cursing (only in forums or posts) but that woman is a serious bitch.  I can only imagine what she would have done if say a small child had torn up her bible.

People like her make me sick, its her own damned fault the bible was damaged in the first place. If it was that important she wouldn't have left it laying around outside to begin with. That would be like me leaving my Kindle out side. So not going to happen.

Wish I believed in hell...because that is where someone like this woman belongs...

[...] Sounds like the woman that drowned all five of her children in the upstairs bathroom because they were "demons" and then laid them out on her bed and prayed for their souls to be delivered to heaven.

Regardless... further proof that religion can easily foster delusion, insanity and violence.

This woman did an evil thing but was not evil herself. I think that the reason she was so calm was because she truly believed that she was doing God's will.

It truly illustrates Steven Weinberg's quote: "With or without religion, good people can behave well and evil people can do evil; but for good people to do evil - that takes religion."

I doubt she'll get five years because she's sixty-five years old, but that would be great.

I wish stuff like this was on the news and radio. The general public never hears about the crazy christians that burn dogs and fire bomb gay people's houses.

Adriana I don't think I remember ever seeing you curse on this forum lol

I agree with everything everyone has said so far.

That poor bible should have been treated much more humanely!

Wow, this is so disgusting i dont even know what to say. I hope she is punished to the fullest extent of the law and even that is too good for her. There should never be any reason to do this to an animal.

Yay for South Carolina and realizing that animal abuse and neglect, as well as domestic animal murder (animals in the wild are not dependent on humans but should not be murdered unless rabid or something like that) needs to be taken seriously. I personally have called the Humane Society on many people when I see animal abuse and neglect, as I hope everyone does. She is obviously very sick. I wish these religious fanatics who hurt other living things in the name of their religion would have to be court ordered into a detox type of program, such as the programs that are used when a person has been brainwashed while in cults or after being kidnapped for a long period of time.
