I’ve recently come to the conclusion that even if we didn’t have to worry about nuclear weapons in the hands on doomsday fanatics, the mix of 21st century technology with literal reading and uncompromising adherence to primitive text- will itself lead to the end of the world.

And here’s why:

One hundred years ago there were 1.5 billion people on the planet. People used to have as many children as possible not just because of the divine commandment to breed, but mainly because of the facts of life – short life span and high mortality rate.

You’d have ten kids- and most wouldn’t make it past their first years. Women dying while giving childbirth was also very common, which might explain polygamy.

But today’s reality has changed rapidly. Since the discovery of antibiotics, bacteria and sanitation roughly one hundred years ago, humanity has grown from 1.5 billion to a whopping 6-7 billion today. There is only one reason for this: people still breed as they did before- only now nobody dies from a common cold or a broken limb anymore.

Additionally, we have to realize that while we could always breed more cows, or grow food in space eventually to support all these people- we are limited by our atmosphere.

More people- more pollution –more carbon emissions- less breathable air.

We cannot go on like this endlessly. No one in the world today can claim ignorance of global warming and the effects of deforestation and pollution.

But what amazes me is that in all their UN summits, Kyoto protocols, and G-8 meetings- nobody talks about the heart of the problem:

Global warming is the result of using up too much resources in order to support too many humans.

Now you might read this and say- “so what’s the solution? To start killing people?”

Absolutely not.

The solution is simple: To follow the Chinese in a joint worldly attempt to limit the amount of children each family brings- and stop this insane growth in human population.

In secular countries this happen naturally. In Western Europe the average family has one child- the only ones breeding like crazy there are the Muslims, with 8 children per family on average.

And why? Because god tells them to.

Which is exactly why such an initiative - which is far more important and relevant than any pollution regulation - will never work.

Because it is asking religious people to go against the divine will, even if the divine will is suicide.

We’re all doomed.

Bravo. You've absolutely hit the nail on the head. The quiverfull movement, the catholics, the mormons and the devout muslims are breeding like rabbits. Not only will they suffocate the planet, they're working hard to suffocate reason by raising up entire ignorant armies from the cradle to the gun.

Hey now!
It's not just the Muslims! The Mormons and Catholics are still bunnies in my book, too!
There is also that operation Quiverful that's some nondenom fundy Christian thing that's into the game as well.

I agree as well.. My boyfriend and I are dead set against having kids. We'd rather have a boat and dogs and expensive toys. Way more fulfilling, way less obligation and way better budgeting in the long run.
No offense to you folks out there that DO have kids. It's just a decision I made before realizing it was even a decision.
Not everyone does, you know. I've got a lot of friends that had kids just because they thought it was some mandatory step in being an adult.

it wasn't my intention to single out the Muslims. This problem exists everywhere in the world where you have people who refuse to let go of ancient tradition, but have no objection to modern medicine.

In israel this problem is getting very very serious, as future demographics are clearly visible in how many children go to which educational system- the secualr or the religious (we have two).

And the numbers aren't encouraging. fifty years tops, and Israel is a Jewish theocracy.

Forty years ago, there was a movement called ZPG, Zero Population Growth, it just faded away due to pressure from the right and the Catholic church denigrating the movement.

ZPG, and their more extreme cousins VHE (Voluntary Human Extinction) are still around, as far as I know. Just not very well publicized.

You know I'm Christian and I've agreed with everything you've just and the comments above. I honestly believe that this planet just doesn't have the resources or ability to sustain the world's human population which is still growing. I think that through advances in medicine and technology, plus pregnancy encouraging religions, human beings have tipped what used to be a natural balance.

I firmly believe in the use of contraception and abortion, so as such I think the teachings against this in Catholicism are absurd.

On a final note, in the current economical climate, it would probably be wise for people to stop having kids. Especially if they like to keep their money for personal spending and a higher quality of life.

There is not one reason for this. From modern medicine to modern agricultural techniques, there are many reasons for the explosion in population. To simplify the cause of the problem is an injustice because it suggests a simple solution. There is not a simple solution and while we need to be sure that breeding does not out pace our ability to sustain that population, remember that if we don't, nature will.

of course there are more reasons- which can all be summed up as the industrial revolution and the age of modern science.

but you have to agree that even if there was no environmental regulation whatsoever, but there was a limit to how many children can be conceived per family - then less forests would get cut down to support the needs of 2 billion rather than 7 billion people. same goes for the food industry, automobile industry, energy industry agriculture and so on.

we could go on "polluting" and still cause far less damage than we'd do today even with the best green regulation.

Oh yeah, I agree. :)

I don't see a happy ending to the vast population growth of humans. following it through to conclusion, leads to one stark answer that can't be avoided... It's all part of evolution, survival of the fittest... It's the one inevitability for the human species.
