I don't understand something that I do. I use the phrase "goddamnit". Alot. In fact, it's my default expression of anger or frustration.

What I don't understand is why I say it. I didn't plan to. I didn't sit down one day and decide, "from now on 'goddamnit' is the phrase". It just came out, so to speak.

This is curious to me because I no longer believe there is a god to damn people. I no longer believe that people can be damned. And I no longer believe there is a place to be damned to.

But, goddamnit, it sure seems to be a favorite phrase of mine!

Simple..It's culturally ingrained. I catch myself saying " Jesus.." when I hear of someone's stupidity. On the other hand, we're non-believers so we can use those names in vain.. LOL

Yup like Rob said, its ingrained into our minds to say certain things like that. I always use "goddamnit" for frustration/anger and "jesus christ" for whatever reason. I dont mean to, it just comes out of my mouth. And yes, at least as atheists we dont have the irrational fear of being struck down just for utilizing particular words or phrases. God damn thats a good question though! lol

Cursing has it's own little spot in the brain, which is why some people with aphasia cannot talk but can cuss like a sailor.  apparently,  it stores whatever it deems appropriate for the purpose, my favorite is the "F" word, but my daddy used a stream of words that I never could figure out.

You can move to another country and learn the language there... and the cursewords will never seem as satisfying as the ones you picked up originally.  Clearly "goddamnit" got to you early and nothing will satisfy like letting a "goddamnit" fly out.

It's not something to be troubled by.

That's like asking why do Christians call the days of the week after Norse and Roman gods.  

It is just part of our culture.

When something goes wrong and I blurt out "Fuck!" I am definitely not saying sex feels like losing a  computer file.

Yeah. I had a boss once who, when he wanted to make a point about how long it had been would say, "since Christ was a corporal". That would stir the Christians up!
