Why is it Ok to talk about being a Christian, but not ok to talk about being an Atheist?

I am a firm believer that every body is entitled to have their own beliefs. And with that being said, everybody should respect everybodies beliefs, EVEN if they don't agree.
Another thing I should mention, I think that regardless of what you believe in, I feel that everyone of us should have dignity and respect to eachother, to have peace on earth. Ofcourse being Religious, this "can" be hard. Eg. The Holy Bible doesn't agree with homosexuality. And this belief can make many Christians not accepting to the gay community. Which in my opinion can cause a lot of controversy and makes many Christains prejudice against gays. And to me this is not peace on earth.
I have a story that really upsets me. My boyfriend's sister is a Christian, and believes truly in God. Me being an atheist, it was hard for me talk about my beliefs (because it seems wrong to society). So from there, I always hid my beliefs and I would go along with the Religious comments everyone made. Then one day, my beliefs slipped out infront of my boyfriend's sister. We were watching a movie dealing with ghosts, and I slipped out the words "I don't believe in ghosts". From there she was like "because you believe in science".
And I FINALLY allowed my beliefs to be released after she made that comment. I then said "Yes, I do believe in science". From there, she got really offended, and said many things that upset me. She said "I can never have you in my life or around me any more". She put me down by saying "YOU believe in man kind". And she NEVER once allowed me to make one comment, she talked over me and over me and over me. She even made comments saying "I'm ignorant". She basically tried making me feel be-little about myself because I didn't believe in God.
She now ignores me when ever she comes over to visit her brother (my boyfriend), she NEVER talks to me, she doesn't even acknowledge that I'm there. But I NEVER once put her down, or tried to be-little her because of her beliefs.
Moral of my story. Why is it ok to be born into a world and have religion shoved down our throats? But it's not ok to talk about being an atheist? My story is just another story of many other stories where Religion is prejudice. And interupts peace on earth. It's just another example of another Christian putting somebody down because of thier beliefs JUST because we don't believe what they believe in. Me and her no longer have a friendship relationship because of "Religion".....Very sad.

This is the question I've been asking for years. LOGICALLY how can you ridicule somebody who DOESN'T believe in a talking snake and flying human beings?

Slowly but surely people are coming out as atheists I have a strong feeling within a couple years (especially after all this 2012 non sense) Atheists will be more widely accepted.

Strangely enough, i have had more friendly conversations with priests and other clergy, that knew I was atheist, than I have had with church goers.

Many people are closed minded, and "trained" to think anyone who doesn't believe in a god is wrong, or evil. They then have only 2 choices on how to deal with it; Hatred, or Try to convert.

I disagree. Beliefs should not be beyond reproach. Respect people? Yes. Respect beliefs? Hell no!

That is too bad about your boyfriend's sister, but that is on her and not you. She is displaying her character and its ugly side. One thing I have noticed of atheists is that they generally are more polite and better behaved than theists.

What is your boyfriend's opinion of this? I take it he is not an atheist or is not open about it?

Since your blog post was posted to twitter here is a response from one of the followers:
@ThinkAtheist Britney should tell the rude Christian to fuck off out of her house, she is not welcome and Britney cannot guarantee her safety, not for being a Christian, nor for having a different opinion, but for being arrogant and rude by ignoring her in her own home.

It really doesn't even sound like you told her you were an atheist. You just said that you don't believe in ghosts. I may be wrong, but I don't remember there being ghosts in the bible. In fact, you should show her this little excerpt from that book she believes to be holy.
Hebrews 9:27 “Man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgment.”
Or just show her this link, which is from a Christian website.

Well, Aric, there's the greatest ghost of all...the Holy Ghost.

Oh yeah...I kinda forgot about that. I was thinking more along the lines of a Jacob Marley-esque ghost. Anyway, Brittany can still probably get her boyfriend's sister to talk to her by showing her the link I posted before.

Many Christians see our lack of belief as a direct attack on their way of life. It seems like major insecurity to me.

She is not a Christian. She does not follow the Word of Christ aka God. She is a wolf in sheep's clothing.
She will burn in Tartarus for her sin and it is all her own fault for not listening to her Savior. Pity that.

Here's your ammo. Make her suffer for her sins by promising eternal hellfire for being such a bitch.

I feel the same way that Andrea does, for some our lack of belief threatens their way of life. She may just be completely threatened by the fact that you are a good moral person that lives her life according to her own will instead of that of the big sky daddy. Can be a very unsettling thing to realize your entire life is based on something completely irrelevant.
