Why I personally speak out about atheism and why I speak out about and against religion.
A friend of my recently asked me why it seemed like I had a vendetta
against religion. Personally, I find the word vendetta to be a bit too
strong, but I will let it go. This got me thinking about why I think it
would be privy of me to share many of the reasons why I talk about
religion and speak out against it. So here it goes:
Firstly, I find truth to be highly important in both my life and the life of
society as a whole. I think it is unhealthy to believe untrue things
for bad reasons. I want to live in a world where people see the value
in truth. I see religion as untrue, and so I speak out against it.
I also speak out about it and against it to show people the reasons why I
do not have a belief in god. I do this because it shows them not only
what reasons I have, but that I have not rejected religious belief
lightly. I want people to see how much time and careful though and
research went into my change from theist to atheist.
I speak out because currently atheism is ranked as the least trusted and
most discriminated minority in the united states. I want to change this
sad fact. Many people have false preconceptions and generalizations
about atheists and I hope to show people that a lot of them are really
I speak out because most of the holy books are packed full of evils that are commanded or condoned and most believers I've talked to either don't know this or ignore it.
I speak out because I have yet to find sufficient justifiable evidence to
have a belief in any god and I want to see why others believe and if
they know something I don't
I speak out because historically religion has been the cause of many evils and atrocities.
Events like the Holy wars, executions of purported witches, religious
promoted slavery, religious induced genocides, cult massacres,
Religious human sacrificing, Religious sanctioned executions, and many,
many more historical evils attributed to all sorts of religions and
often justifiable by key passages in their holy books and beliefs.
I speak out because of the current evils and atrocities committed by
todays religions around the world. Evils like, suicide bombers,
executions, suppression of women, slavery, holy wars, genocide, honor
killings, genital mutilation, denial of human rights, and many, many
more evils attributed to all sorts of religions and often justifiable
by key passages in their holy books and beliefs.
I speak out because in my own country, religion is used to suppress the rights
of people, to suppress the truth, to cause harm, and spread lies. Some
examples of these things that go on in the united states include:
genital mutilation, discrimination against equal rights for the lesbian,
gay, bisexual and transgendered community, the attempted denial of a
mothers right to choose, the denial of the right to terminate your own
life, the suppression of stem cell research which could lead to the cure
for most of societies greatest diseases and ailments, the attempt to
push the religious concept of creation onto students and claim it as
science, the allowance of parents to deny medical treatment to their
children for religious reasons, attempts to press religious morals on
everyone else through politics, and many, many more evils attributed
to all sorts of religions and often justifiable by key passages in
their holy books and beliefs. .
I speak out because people attempt to use politics to pass laws and deny rights based on their personal religious views.
I speak out because I am bombarded many times a day by religious people
speaking out. I encounter radio and television commercials, newspaper,
magazine and internet ads, billboards and church signs, songs, social
network posts and emails, door to door preachers and street preachers,
family and friends.
I speak out because I have the right to, as you have the right to speak out about your religion.
As long as people spread lies and misinformation, preach and promote,
commit and condone evils, attempt to pass laws pushing their beliefs on
others, discriminate out of religious justifications, deny facts and
justify belief for poor reasons or enable others to do these things,
then I will speak out about religion and against it. It's nothing
