Why do we still swear on the bible but yet the bible does not hold up in the court of law...

Title says it all guys. I brought this up in chat but I thought I wanted to get this question out to you all on Think Atheist.

Also another question is have any of you had to swear on the bible in a court of law? How did that go?

Also is the whole purpose about swearing on the bible is just because if you lie your going to go to hell? how lame-o is that? grrrrr....

I assume that yes, they want you to think that if you lie you will be offending god, and probably will go to hell. Its part of the fear that controls most of the nation. Of course, its not advertised as such becuase then it would be in clear violation of church and state seperation.

If that situation ever comes up to me I am going to make sure its perfectly clear on record that I do not believe in the bible, and asking me to swear on it is about as productive as swearing on a jar of pickles.

I think it would be more effective to have people swear on their genitals. At least they'll have something they care about on the line.
