I dealt with different people with different points of views and different ideologies. When it comes to the atheists..They are exceptionally smart! I thought about the reason for so long..Until i found my own answer. As an atheist myself.. I am not considered a smart guy at all Lol but being an atheist is not an easy thing. Most of us ended up being atheists after reading about different religions and comparing these religions with other religions. As well as comparing all these religions to science. Atheists keep reading books of religions, science, physiology and all other sciences associated with humans and nature in general. I am not a reader myself but I found myself automatically opening online articles about nearly everything and start reading and analyzing the same time. The first thing i learned is ACCEPTING DIFFERENCE..No one looks exactly like the other, we all have different traits and features.. The moment I accepted difference is the same moment i started to read about different religions and other ideologies.

Even when atheists argue with each other, they show scientific legitimate evidence to each other to verify their points of views and no matter how hard the arguments can be, they always had a smile on their faces, so they are also wise and loving and know how to argue.

Ladies and gentlemen, accepting difference is the key towards knowing more about our lives, not like other people who are trapping themselves in their bubbles and reluctant to know anything different from the thing they grew up with.

To put it all in a nutshell, being an atheist is not just stop believing in god. being an atheist is an effort made to reach this conclusion by reading a lot and making a lot discussions with different people and trying their best to analyze them. In my opinion thats why atheists end up being smarter than average people.

What are your opinions guys?

It's hard to generalise, but you've done a kind of survey of different groups, so you are in a good position to know.  I don't know about "smarter", but I do think that in general, atheists think for themselves and take the trouble to educate themselves WITH SCIENCE in order to back up their point of view.  They don't educate themselves with religious tracts, or Conservapedia.  Maybe that's the difference.

I find intelligent people in all walks of life, and some of the smartest have been the least educated.

yeah exactly! if you thought about it....when they educate themselves with science, they are not only backing up their point of view, they are also widening their brains and ways of thinking..Their intelligence will gradually increase, as i said before...i am not a smart guy..but i am kinda smarter than i were years ago because i started reading a lot about eveything...so yeah.. that explains it

As someone who raised without religion, I feel like I'm the exception to your theory here. I've always been an atheist but I never got involved in atheist communities like TA and on youtube until I started looking at the religions around me and finding their arguments to be (for the most part) not only false, but in many cases utterly ridiculous.

To propose an alternate hypnothesis: Atheism correlates strongly with skepticism, skepticism correlates strongly with intelligence. i.e. there's no direct correlation between atheism and intelligence but we see it because both are found in high numbers in the skeptic community.

In the anarchist community I found a lot of smart people.  But there's a big difference between "intelligent" and "smart".  I find that the intelligent people who are into left wing / right wing politics tend to be held back by bad thinking habits (i.e. dogma).

@ Matt. I would agree. I have found that when people become atheists they tend to become more “intelligent”. What I mean is that they begin to increase their capacity to think more objectively because they have begun to improve their reasoning skills. We all have the capacity for critical thinking. It is a skill that needs to be developed but it tends not to get used too much by people who do not ask any “big questions” because they already have the answers. Why think too deeply if you already have the answers handed to you and accepted on faith?

I have met people from Mensa with IQ’s over 150 but who appear intellectually naïve because of their faith. I have also met people of below average intelligence that would be more intellectual astute with their questions and observations. Faith based thinking is a weakness. Once it is replaced with critical thinking our capacity to reach our intellectual potential is increased. As we improve our reasoning abilities we get “smarter”. So keep “Thinking Atheist”.

If you are comparing theists to atheists in an area that is predominantly religious then there is little doubt that atheists are more knowledgeable and intelligent. Why? Cuz it takes chutzpah, skepticism and a dogged curiosity to sift through the bullshit and reject it. Those apostates among the duped tend to be inherently superior and that is how they see themselves through the morass.

A lot of atheists will tellya that atheists have one thing in common and only one. That is a lot closer to true in areas that are predominantly atheist. In general atheists share tendencies in terms of personality, views, and in how they think.

Theists ignore the least-defensible and more absurd/outrageous passages in their scriptures. A lot of non-Bible non-Koran reading believers simply don't know about the horseshit that many many atheists are familiar with.

It's not that atheists are smart, it's that smart people become atheists.

Atheist are smarter because they believe in their power and strength. They don't rely on outside sources to help them. How come most of the elite of the technology world are atheist?Because they believe in themselves and not an outside force to help them in the world.

Its not so much that they are smarter per se, relative to theists, but intellectual honesty is probably a common trait from what I can see.

Theists, to remain theists, must be intellectually dishonest; they must filter out information that might sway them from theism, and focus on information that helps them believe.

As gaps continue to shrink, its progressively harder to remain a theist if intellectually honest.

IE: Newton might have been brilliant, but, also believed in the supernatural, given the upbringing, knowledge and culture of the times.

A circa 2016 Newton could STILL be brilliant, and a theist, but it would have been much harder.

Part of the hard-wired intellectual dishonesty seems to be a simple result of the way their brains are constructed differently.  Theists, as a tendency, feel information that is in conflict with beliefs to be threatening.  A person who says "Happy Holidays" instead of "Merry Xmas" is attacking xmas, etc.

They are hard wired, by their genes and upbringing, to filter out threatening thoughts.  There are up to 5 regions of the brain involved typically.

If you look at a herd of Zebra, some are head down, eating...and some are nervously watching the pride of lions.

If the Zebra never look up from their grazing, they can end up as lion chow...but if they can't eat because they are too nervous to stop lion gazing and do enough grass grazing, they are weak and sickly, and end up lion chow anyway.

So, some brains are genetically prone to gaze, or to graze, or to alternate enough, as a compromise.

So not worrying as much, because things are under control...can be an evolutionary response....and work even if there ARE lions...so enough grazing can occur.

:D
