Wow, I guess I haven't made it as "known" as I thought. I need to redo my whole profile on FB to exclaim my atheism. I'm getting really tired of having to deal with this constantly.

My aunt and her son (my cousin) are going through an extremely rough time in their lives. My cousin has been wrongly accused of child molestation. I've reviewed all the information I have been given and I have came to the conclusion that he really is being wrongly accused. (The boy accusing him has also accused several others in the past of the same thing, almost the same story, and has been labeled a delinquent child by DSS. There's a huge story behind it with more facts but those were the main reasons I chose to believe my cousin's side.) So, I can see why they are turning to their Christian god for "love" and "support" There's fear in the air.

However, this has put me in a predicament. My aunt recently posted a status on FB asking people to pray. Since prayer really does nothing, I sent a private message letting her know that I care and I wanted her to know that I am thinking of them. Here's the message:

My First message [it was cut out]: Hey, I saw your status? Is everything okay? I hope so. love you.

What am I to say to this? It's put me in an awkward predicament. I thought about saying something like, "Oh, I don't believe that prayers really have an effect on the outcome but if there's anything I can do to help out let me know." or "Two hands working is better than a thousand clasp together in prayer so if there's anything I can do let me know!" I just keep thinking there's gotta be a nicer way to say it without starting more controversy within my family.

Or just ignore it and not respond?

Oh, these are the days of our lives.....

I say don't respond. You're not going to suddenly convince her prayer is worthless, and I don't think it's appropriate to challenge her in this instance. I didn't bother challenging my family after my grandfather passed. When people are hurting, there's no sense in bothering; they'll only lash out anyway. Just smile and nod!

Yeah, I haven't responded. It's just one of those moments that makes you cock your head to the side lol

Yeah, I have those moments a lot. I had to hid my little brother's FB feed b/c what he's been posting lately is just too much for me to stomach. I check his page out every now and then, but I quickly learned not to engage these comments. If you ignore them, at least you're not validating them!

Yeah, there's a few feeds on my list that I wish not see. I ignore most of the "pray for me" posts but sometimes I get a laugh out of all the delusions these people are under. I really only get fired up when posts contain fallacies or inappropriate allegations against something.

Btw, I changed my bio on my fb. I hope everyone gets the picture now lol

"I try to live my life to the fullest every day! Ivy helps me accomplish this. She's so awesome! Her daddy is my lovely husband, Chris. He's not as awesome as Ivy but he's pretty freaking cool!

I'm at a "stuck" point in my school stuff. Hopefully, I'll know by fall where I'm going to finish my psychology degree. I'm ready to take more CLASSES!

I <3 to learn new stuff. Evolution is amazing. Biology is fun. The human brain is a wild evolutionary development. Reality is just as complex as the imagination.

I tend to be outspoken.

Oh yeah, I'm an atheist. "

Out of all of my family, I think that this aunt would handle the news the best. All 3 of her sons are athiest/agnostic. One is even a blatant anti-theist. [He never posts on fb, though I wish he would.] I just didn't want to make something into a big deal in her time of need. I understand she's going through a tough situation that most people would never even dream of being in and I think that's mainly why I was speechless.

& Yeah, the first lawyer was going to cost around 10K. This new guys she is talking about is around 15K. Lawyers are making good money these days lol

BTW, I did reply. I simply said "I love y'all! :)"

Praying is the least you can do. Literally.

To keep the peace, I usually just ignore things like that.... it really irks me, but its thier right to feel that way.

I wouldn't push the issue. Just wish them luck and remind them that you will help however you can.

My parents sometimes ask me to say an 'Atheist prayer'. lol My dad is just being smart when he says it, but sometimes I'm not sure if my mom is serious or just joking as well...
