Let’s look at the so-called crucifixtion of Jesus Christ. One of the most devastating things the romans would do whenever they conquered and occupied a territory was to cut down the trees of that area to build their infamous slave galleys. At the time Pontus Pilate was governor wood was so scarce that the romans would simply rip off wood from the jewish people’s houses to use as building material or fire wood for themselves. What this meant was that it was highly unlikely that they would use six large pieces of wood to crucify the three men mentioned in the christian bible. For one thing, the jews were going to try to steal that wood because they were desparate for wood. And the romans almost certainly were not going to allow that precious wood to be used for such a mundane thing as a crucifixtion. Yet the romans needed to use crucifixtion for tactical, strategic and psycological reasons: to deter the jewish people from rioting or rebelling. How, then, did they solve the problem? Cement crosses, is how.
The romans would dig out the shape of a cross in the ground, add pieces of steel to reinforce their cross, than pour concrete in the mold. After the concrete had set and cured, the romans would then dig out the cross, find a suitable site to plant it, dig a deep hole to stick the cross in, add rocks to solidify its base, pour concrete into the hole, and then they were ready for their crosses first victim.
And the romans didn’t nail their victims to the cross, either. What they did was loop a rope around each of the victims two ankles and hung the victim upside down with his legs spread wide and with each of the loops around the crosses two arms. Than they stood gaurd around the victim to ensure that no one tried to help him by killing him. In time the fly’s would be attracted to the victim, begin biting into him and laying their maggots, and the victim would begin screaming in pain, begging to be killed. But the romans would not let anyone to get near enough to the victim to kill him. They wanted the victim to scream and scream and scream and scream until he finally died. And even then the romans would not allow the body to be moved. They insisted that the carcass remain on the cross until only the bones were left.
The jews had many stories like these but the christians refused to believe them, calling the jews liars, murderers and every derogatory term they could think of. And well they should because if the jews were telling the truth then the christians were obviously lying.
