just want everybody to weigh in as to what they think and different theories that are out there as to what happens after death.....like spirit or soul escapes, u are re-born in a different life form, go through different life stages to be born as a human again or energy just passes on, or u gain enlightenment etc.....please feel free to comment on anything and everything......and also if u can include some articles or books for research that would be awesome.....thanks

My neurological functions will shut down, my body will die, and in my case, be harvested for organs that might be of use to other people before being donated to science. Eventually, whatever remains will decompose and the various atoms that comprised my body will be recycled into some other form of matter.

As for "Me", unless the ability to upload a human consciousness into a computer or the like is developed before then, I'll cease to be when my neurological functions cease.

Life after death, well not for me. If we are buried in a way where we can decompose, so bacteria, insects and what ever else can take advantage of our corpse. There will be life for something by way of earth processes or a Dave G pointed out maybe organ donorship.

Everything we know about about human thought and our awareness, our personality, and everything that makes us who we are is a function of our physical brain. This is why our ability to think, or even our personality can be severely altered via damage to the brain. We can concluded that when our brains completely cease to function that our thoughts, mind and personality will cease to exist. We are no different than any other form of life on the planet in this sense. We are just lucky enough to possess minds capible of thinking about such concepts while we are alive. This is really a great gift, and to go through life without using this mind to think critically is a true waste.

This organism will end the way all organisms end, decomposition. My genes will live on in my children. My memes will live on for a little while longer if they are fit.

I swear this same question gets asked at least once a month here.

Well apart from the heart stopping and brain function ceasing, according to the second law of thermodynamics, any energy stored in the body will tend to want to dissapate. We become food for the worms, and our energy is spread towards entropy. That's it. Pretty simple when you apply physics to it.

Abso-fucking-lutely nothing!

I will ascend to Heaven, kick Jesus in the nuts and return to earth (after 3 days!) to proclaim that I am now the Messiah. Then I'll get all the girls and Christmas will be changed to Galenmass and me and Santa Claus will double-team the tooth fairy and we'll all live happily ever after.

Or, y'know, NOTHING could happen :)

The exact same thing that was happening before you were born. Life goes on, and you're not in it.
