An innocent man going to prison for life, or a guilty man going free?
Hmmmm. Interesting question. With no background on either man or scenario, with just the basics...
I'd have to go with the innocent man going to prison for life would be worse.
If a guilty man goes free he'll be caught the next time. There's not really such thing as a one time criminal, plus if he gets away with his crime he'll get cocky and do it again. What goes around comes around.
Undoubtedly, unquestionably, the very aim of the Justice system should be to avoid "taking the life of an innocent"... whether you want to look at it that way or not, imprisoning someone for any length of time is tantamount to taking their life, to do that to someone innocent of a crime is itself a crime. We should most certainly be willing to allow some guilty to slip through the cracks (hopefully to be caught again later) to avoid falsely imprisoning anyone.
