Just watched this on the BCC where Louis revisits the Westboro Baptists after 4 years. For those in BBC2 land it is on again tomorrow night. Should be on utube soon.

It’s difficult to know where to start so I will let it speak for itself. We have discussed them here previously See Also

The silence of the “real” Christian is deafening. There are a few mumbles from the sidelines. However they won’t get too vocal because if they start saying the Phelps are deluded they will be forced to confront their own delusion. Granted it is not held as extremely as these Fundamentalists. Leaving that aside it is the hatred and the vitriol it creates that is the most obnoxious thing about them. The “elders” have destroyed their children’s minds. The thing about hatred though is that it is self destructive. Those that preach and foster hatred tend to be consumed by it. So they are destroying themselves which is good. There is nothing Christian about them. They are a bigoted and deluded cult.

I will post the video shortly here. In the meantime here is another link to the first (2007) documentary.

It's called hate crime and hate speech, which IS illegal.  There is no reason that people like this whose vile rhetoric sickens many people to the very core should be allowed their 1st amendment rights when they themselves attempt to infringe on the rights of others.

At least they actually read the bible and know what it says, unlike most people. Still wrong though.

Nate Phelps, son of Fred Phelps is mentioned in a NYT article on clergy who become Athiest. Fred is the leader of the Westboro Baptist Church.

Btw: the convergence of clergy to Athiesm is growing trend.

On the Documentary Channel last night "The Anatomy of Hate" aired and included this bunch of wackos in their filming.  While the show was upsetting in portraying how humanity is consumed by hate on a global scale, it also offers some hope that we might someday rise above the call for hatred of our fellow man.

Hate is not instinctual, someone teaches you how and who to hate.

The thing is... I don't get angry by listening to them.  I just feel sorry for them.  Everything they say is quite logical from a Christian perspective.  They read their bibles and know what it says.  I think what is more scary is that there are those out there that totally agree with them but don't have the balls to actually put signs up and protest the same stuff.
