This week I celebrated the birth of my first child with my wife. My wife has taken to singing to her, and one of her favorite songs to sing is Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. The other day I got to thinking that the lyrics are quite outdated, as we now know exactly what a star is. So I endeavored to create some new, more accurate lyrics. Let me know what you think.

Twinkle twinkle little star
Made of hydrogen you are

Way beyond our atmosphere
An orbit 'round you is a year

Twinkle twinkle little star
Now I know just what you are.

Thanks.. I'd been trying to come up with something a little better, but everything in the second couplet is accurate as I understand things. Regardless of where a star is, it's beyond our atmosphere (well, until we get swallowed up by the sun in a few billion years) and, while a year may not line up with an earth year, any planet's year is defined by the period it takes to orbit around its star.

Maybe the second line in the first couplet should be changed to "Fueled by hydrogen you are" though, since even though (i believe) all stars are hydrogen fueled, they produce and contain other elements.

I think what you did is cool... but as I was reading this I thought about the original lyrics. I wouldn't entirely dismiss them. "How I wonder what you are" is the reason we know as much as we do today, and the very reason why even though we do know so much, it's still true, and that's what keeps us continuing to explore and question, even now. It's the spirit of the lyrics that got us where we are today, 'wondering what they are," and not saying, "wull gawd dun et."

Anyway, congrats!
