Recently I was researching a comment from a theist that pointed to a couple of famous examples of atheists that "prove" the evil of not having a dot on your forehead, ending every email with "ihs" or a ponytail that allows the invisible friend to lead your activities in a wholesome and righteous path - or some such nonsense. The two that were mentioned and are the most common in my experience were Joseph Stalin and Adolph Hitler.

I'm going to have to disagree on both. For different reasons but both of these megalomaniacs were clearly not atheist.
Stalin was an anti-theist not an atheist. He didn't want anyone/anything to enjoy an opinion higher than his. His was a political stand not a spiritual one.

For the record an atheist can also be an anti-theist but they are different.

Atheist = without god (or without religious delusion; no, that isn't how Webster defines it - that is my paraphrasing)
Anti-theist = against god(s)

Most xtians are actually anti-theist and oddly enough atheist. They vehemently denounce the existence of all other invisible friends proclaiming that theirs is the only possible one; hence, anti-theist. Yes, most polytheists would not fit this description but I digress. Xtians (capitalized because it is the first word in a sentence not to apply some divine value) were described by Ken Harris as being atheist about every god but one. That isn't an exact quote but the point is made that if you deny a god you are an atheist to somebody. If you deny all gods you are still an atheist but the crowd gets bigger.

But more about old Joe at a later date.

Which brings me to Adolph. To try and figure him out I went to the source. I read "Mein Kampf". As an aside, I've probably been added to a watch list somewhere since I downloaded it from the "christian identity" web site. They offer it there as a service to any visitors who want to understand racism the way they do. If you want a real ride on the wacko carousel go visit those people.

So, I took several hours of my life to read the translated version. We all know how that worked for the xian bible but I'm relatively confident that these translators didn't leave any of it on the cutting room floor because it didn't agree with the overall message. The overall message was very clear. World domination by ethnic cleansing. The portions that struck me the hardest was the similarity to the writings of the "dominionists" and other xian nationalists. Pardon me as I digress for one more moment to mention that one of the sites I used for this informal research actually quoted Carrie Prejean (the fundie Miss America person) in the header of the banner at the top of the page. The site was the "christian socialist party" website and it appears to be a political action group for exactly what the name says.

Ok, back to Adolph. There are hundreds of references in Mein Kampf to god and xtian values. Hundreds. Here are three that seem quite clear:

"And so I believe to-day that my conduct is in accordance with the will of the Almighty Creator. In standing guard against the Jew I am defending the handiwork of the Lord." (p.46)

"The yoke of slavery is and always will remain the most unpleasant experience that mankind can endure. Do the Schwabing decadents look upon Germany s lot to-day as aesthetic ? Of course, one doesn t discuss such a question with the Jews, because they are the modern inventors of this cultural perfume. Their very existence is an incarnate denial of the beauty of God s image in His creation." (p.107)

"What we have to fight for is the necessary security for the existence and increase of our race and people, the subsistence of its children and the maintenance of our racial stock unmixed, the freedom and independence of the Fatherland; so that our people may be enabled to fulfil the mission assigned to it by the Creator." (p.125)

These are not the writings of an atheist.

The subject of this is "The Nutball Connection" so let me try and tie up the loose ends. If your ideology suggests that you and your team have a calling that is somehow superior to everyone else - and specifically because your invisible friend said so without any further proof - you are a delusional nutball.

That is good to know for future debate. Thanks for the research and the post!

I'd have to check, but I believe that Adolf referenced Martin Luther once or twice in his speeches. Or maybe they just sounded similar.

For Dave G:
Mein Kampf, Chapter 8, page 4 "To this group belong not only the genuinely great statesmen but all the great reformers as well. Beside Frederick the Great we have such men as Martin Luther and Richard Wagner."
