The Modern Crusades exposed by GQ

Everyday in the days leading up the the Iraq Invasion Rumsfeld was sending Bush briefings that included Biblical passages. This is a serious afront to what we can be allowing as actions of the US government. We really need to come up with a way to drive a bigger wedge between religion and government. This crusade is going to come back to haunt us for centuries. It's hard to deny that Bush was waging a religious war on the backs of soldiers of all faiths, including those without faith. This is yet another embarrassment on the world stage. My hope for Obama is waining as he continues with wire taps, declaring national security for secrecy, military tribunals, continued support of the the Faith Based office, etc. etc.

Does anyone have any ideas of how we can drive that wedge further? I'm thinking that this warrants a lawsuit but it needs to come from a source that isn't identified as atheist to garner as much public support as possible.

At least Obama MODIFIED the tribunals into something less than a farce! (Not saying they are perfect by any means, but at least it is a start! )
Awesome article and now featured.
The only suggestion I can make is to write your Congress and Reps.
All of them.
I wish (but seriously doubt) that a relative of a fallen atheist service member could sue for wrongful death as it is proved to have begun as a religious war.......

Great post Gaytor, my apologies for almost hijacking it. :p

Gotta get back in the habit of double-checking to make sure news hasn't already been posted here before I go posting it.

yeah, i agree American need to drive a dep deep wedge between their armed forces and any form of religion.

Your use of the word crusades is total bs, wwe all know the reasons we went in and the reasons we were given for going in FULL STOP. As for it going to haunt us for years to come I disagree and I am sure that will not surprise you, we will soon have an Iraq that will not be a danger to its neighbours or its own people. There will be tyough times ahead and there will be more innocent deaths at the hands of secterians who will bomb and murder for their brand of belifes.
No onne but religion can be blamed for this. A tyrant is gone, this can only be good.

Now that Obama is in power and has the responsiblitiy of the american people on his hands, I am quite sure that he will keep in force the the policies, albeit in a weaker form. that will keep American safe in their homeland.
As for your main question, surley their is a centre right conservative/republican who will agree that firm barriers are needed between goverment and the armed forces where religion is concerned. If he/she can be found and acts , then that, in my opinion will carry weight.

One last point,

you right your post on may 17th 1.25pm, its read by the lovely misty at 1.52,.

Misty states awesone article and features said blog. My own thoughts on featured articles would be an article that had at least been read by ten different user, not the usual liberal rants that is getting tiresome. Is it the case of who you know and your standing amoust the liberal atheist intellegencia at think atheist.

a7...huh? I don't know anyone at Think Atheist and have had a couple of blogs featured. If my rants against fundamentalist Christians like Ray Comfort are "liberal rants", then I'm happy to be a ranting liberal!

Gaytor, unfortunately, until religion is replaced with reason in the minds of the American people, politicians like Bush and Rumsfeld will never see any repercussions for these type of actions. Personally, if Rumsfeld wanted to give President Bush some religious inspiration, I've got no problem with him sending personal notes with the the kind of bullshit that was on those reports, but it does need to be kept off of government documents. It's too bad that so many in this country think that what Rumsfeld did was praiseworthy. And now I have an idea for another blog...or liberal rant...so I'm going to get writing!!

Pentagon Briefings No Longer Quote the Bible

The Pentagon said Monday it no longer includes a Bible quote on the cover page of daily intelligence briefings it sends to the White House as was practice during the Bush administration.

...

The Rev. Barry W. Lynn, executive director of Americans United for Separation of Church and State, on Monday said U.S. soldiers "are not Christian crusaders, and they ought not be depicted as such."

"Depicting the Iraq conflict as some sort of holy war is completely outrageous," Lynn said in a statement. "It's contrary to the constitutional separation of religion and government, and it's tremendously damaging to America's reputation in the world."
