The Mighty Peals of Oppression!!

Ok, so I was being a bit melodramatic.

I finished finals last week and passed everything, so I spent some time this week catching up on some much needed sleep. This was also one of the first weeks when it was predictably warm enough to sleep with my windows wide open. Unfortunately, that meant that I was very rudely awoken by church bells at about 8am Tuesday morning.

As I am laying in my hungover stupor trying to fall back asleep, I started thinking about church bells. It occurred to me that church bells are actually a very unfair thing. I had never really thought about it, but what a clear example of how religion is thrust upon people who might not actually care.

I'm sure that if I climbed up on my roof with a microphone and some loudspeakers every hour and yelled "Wooooo its *time* Milwaukee!!!!!!" for a minute straight, there would be plenty of people calling the police and I'd end up with a noise complaint. If people don't want to hear my completely neutral expression of time keeping, why should I have to hear church bells? What is even the point of church bells anymore, anyways, now that there are clocks everywhere. It's not like we need help knowing the hour.

My brain just kind of died right there, so I'm not gonna go on anymore.

I wonder if there is any way to file a noise complaint against a church...

I don' think your complaint alone would do the trick, but a petition would work. That is, if you can find enough people who won't find this blasphemous.

I had a friend who lived near church bells. Bad idea if you have pets, they will go crazy. Does this bring down the value of a house?

I've never thought about it before, but I wonder if there is some obscure rule saying that the time can be publicized this way by churches. If the churches didn't, maybe another institution would fill in. (For some reason, I'm thinking banks.)

In any case, give it a shot, and tell us what happens!

This reminds me of an episode of The Sarah Silverman program in which she was woken up by church bells. And I agree that church bells have become an anachronism in modern society.

There's probably a law on how loud (in decibels) the bells are permitted to be. Measure it and if it's over, you have a good cause to complain. Otherwise, it's no different than someone driving down the street with their radio on, really.
