Comment by Nelson on April 25, 2011 at 5:19pm but that's not how it went.
the earliest examples of anything that we could call life would have self-replicated. then more complex organisms would have asexually reproduced. then evolution hit upon sexual reproduction. and even animals that sexually reproduce don't necessarily involve a mother caring for the offspring, nurturing them.
evolution hit upon this strategy later as a way to better ensure the survival of the offspring and, in turn, the genes of the parents.
so, there's no need to explain who gave birth to the first living organism or who cared for the first offspring. :)
Kind of like the which came first saying about the chicken or the egg.
I sum it up to who cares...I like one for lunch or dinner and the other for breakfast.

I enjoy science and the theory of evolution is one of my favorites.
I'm currently looking into the "theory of mind" which is fascinating (well, at least to me).

btw I like chicken and eggs too... chicken fingers... mmmmmmm
in any case, Nelson is right. The earliest organisms didn't have 2 genders, there was just 1 (hence the asexual reproduction). Evolution then eventually developed sexual reproduction, introducing the 2 genders.
Comment by Dustin on April 25, 2011 at 8:02pm sexual reproduction came much later in the process of evolution , as Nelson said above.
Some living organisms reproduce by themselves. Some things also self replicate. It takes millions and millions of years before 2 animals can have sex , have a baby through the female , and then have a mother to take care of it.
A mother is not necessary for the survival of an animal. That's why many animals can pretty much walk and run within an hour of being born. That means they can run from predators , and hide as well. Also , they can find food. Like grass :P

Take bacteria for example. It is one of the first life forms on earth and is still around today. Does it have mothers and fathers? no.
