This has apparently been around for a while, but I was introduced to it for the first time this morning in my email inbox.

Dear All:
This photo is a very rare one, taken by NASA. This kind of event occurs once in 3000 years.
This photo has done miracles in many lives.
Make a wish ... you have looked at the eye of God. Surely you will see the changes in your life within a day.!
Whether you believe it or not, don't keep this mail with you. Pass this at least to 7 persons.
This is a picture NASA took with the Hubbell telescope.
Called 'The Eye of God.'
Too awesome to delete. It is worth sharing.

During the next 60 seconds, Stop whatever you are doing, and take this opportunity.
(Literally it is only One minute!)
Just send this to people and see what happens. Do not break this, please.

*HEAVY sigh*
First of all, this is not “an event”. It’s the Helix Nebula and is visible all the time…to those with the right equipment…not once every 3000 years. This particular photo was taken in 2003. Another similar nebula was recently photographed by the Hubble Space Telescope in May of this year. Snopes.com claims that the photo above has been touched up, adding colored tinting, making the “eye” blue (mein Gott! Herr Hitler was right!), but I can’t find support for that claim. Also, this photo is actually a composite of images taken from the HST and a land based telescope at the Kitt Peak National Observatory in Arizona. Amateur astronomers can see the nebula from earth, but not with this kind of detail.
Second and most importantly, the human mind is wired to find patterns. It’s one of the evolutionary advantages that has helped us survive. As a result, we recognize patterns where none are “intended” for lack of a better word. We see the profiles of
JFK and
King Kong on rocks in the Hawaiian Islands. We see the
head of Jesus complete with crown of thorns in rocky outcroppings in rural Alabama. We see
faces in windows of old creepy houses,
ghostly figures in dark places, and “the eye of god” in ultra-enhanced composite photographs from the Hubble Space Telescope. Why is this so hard for religious head cases to understand?
